I climbed at Stoney today. The ground was muddy in spots, but the rock seamed pretty dry. I got some TR solo laps in on Mozarts and Sculptures crack.

For a short while The Mountain Store was on Tampa just south of Nordoff in the plaza on the east side of Tampa.

Okay, for those who want a refresher in mountain store history near Stoney:

1. Kelty opened sometime in the 70s at the shopping center, SE corner of Tampa / Nordhoff

2. Little Stone's opened sometime in the 70s on the NW corner of Reseda / Plummer (?). (Richard) Stone & (Lamar) Little, owners.

3. Kelty sold to the Thompsen brothers (Jim/Greg) (and perhaps some others?), owners of Wilderness Experience, ca 1978 or so. Renamed "The Mountain Shop" in a moment of crazy originality.

4. Mountain Shop sadly closed its doors sometime around 1985-86 or so. Laurie Zimmet, then the manager of the store, then opened the Backcountry Store at a tiny spot on Devonshire. She scratched out an existence for a couple of years before finally closing shop in the late 80s.

5. I dunno when Little Stone's finally petered out of existence -- i.e., if it lasted longer than Laurie's shop or not.

Lots of folks on this forum were associated with one or more of the shops above, which were incestuously associated with Wildy at various times as well, before that concern became a label slapped on generic Chinese-made junk.

We had some good times back then.
Curt

p.s. It's extremely possible that I've made mistakes and omissions above...

The original Kelty- Mountain store was where A16 is now located on Reseda just north of Ventura Blvd. Jim moved it to Tampa in the early 80's.

FRUMY,

sorry, but that's incorrect. The original Kelty shop was on Victory Blvd in Burbank. nearest cross street was Western.

I'm sorry but in 1973 my girl friends brother & his good buddy cut through the roof of the Mountain store on Reseda & robbed the place. A few months latter they both died when a rope they stole failed.

They actually robbed the place twice. After the first time all Jim did was nail boards over the hole they cut though the roof. They went back through that same hole.

Curt had it right as far as I know. But I didn't move to Ca until 79. Laure was a friend of mine and she loved the store. At the end of the Mtn Shop she took the mailing list and called everyone until she raised the money for the BC store. That store lasted 3.5 years. Last time I heard she lives in the Northwest USA.

That "freeway crack" is called The Gift was a TR 5.9 or lead at 5.10

Was SPCA/Stoney Point Climbing Association ever more than an in-joke? John B once mentioned it to me by those initials.

One of the Stonemaster threads suggests it was unofficial: http://www.supertopo.com/climbing/thread.php?topic_id=150211&msg=151803#msg151803 Still, climbing there has been happening for long enough that perhaps at some point in the past...

Is it safe to climb at Stoney today?

We've been getting a little rain here and there in NoHo, but I don't know what the weathers been like in Chatsworth.

I see that there are a lot of bolts without hangers at Stoney Point. Does anyone know what Size they are so I can bring my own equipment (hangers and nuts).

Should I buy 3/8, 1/2, 10mm, 12mm, or 14mm?

The naked bolts were on top of a couple routes. I only remember two to routes specifically. They are found on Then Main Wall, The main Chimney 5.6 and Mozart's Wall for Amadeus 5.10a and Amadeus II 5.10a.

Dances... yes it is dry... intill it starts raining.

Curt has the names and dates pretty well as I recall.

Where A16 is now... Reseda/ventura, ish. Has been a climbing shop, under different names, forever.

Who remembers SPORTS LTD. ? on Ventura Blvd, Woodland Hills?

I blew a bundle in that place. I remember Eiger Ovals... 20 ea for $40.00, EB's $25 and the Eldered (sp) rope... $120!!!...used that cord for a long time... That one got stretched about 20 extra feet at ARCH ROCK, when Bullwinkle took a flyer. I decided to toss it into a dumpster in C4, someone dug it out and loaned it to the PO FA boys who used it for hauling and fixing??!!!.

And the SPCA is NO JOKE.... that secret society stills rules with a iron fist. They decide what BOLTS STAY and witch ones go. The meetings are held in secret and the ruling board members attend the meetings in costume and do not know the other board members. Ask JW35... he/she is the President and dictator for life.

EDIT:

You need all.... ;>)

I bought my first backpack there, or rather my mother did. Was a Mountain Master external-frame. I couldn't make it feel right so we took it back and got a Camp Trails. That would have been about 1965 when I was 13.

Just for the record; It may have been the Spring of 1973 I quit working at Mtn Life in San Jose and was riding my bicycle to LA and got into a minor accident and had to hitch a ride south. First place I went was the Reseda Mtn Store. I was sitting in the back of the Store with a one of the guys that worked there - Wiemesfelder (spelling?)and watched people coming into the store looking to buy things but there was nothing to buy. It was a pathetic scene. Wiemesfelder told me Dr. Jones would give the store to anybody that would take it. I heard Westridge would not even touch it. At first I told Tom Turntine from Los Gatos about that and was going to go in on it with him and Dr. Jones, but that fell through and it became just me and Dr. Jones. I put in $3,000.00 and Jones matched it. The place was $40,000.00 in debt with no inventory. My connection with Tom Hendricks and his connections with The North Face quickly had me stocking the Mtn Store with Lowa Boots and North Face gear. I got it out of debt in a year of hard work. I think I worked too hard and got tired of it, but because my original plan after leaving Mtn Life was to cross-country ski race, I gave the store away to Greg Bender. I took my $3,000 investment and a bit more (certainly not enough to make my year of labor worth while) and went to Idaho. Rumor has it that I must have left the store in bad shape since I gave it away. In actuality, the store was doing very well and giving it away was about the dumbest thing I ever did, and I seemed to have gotten the rap for it going downhill again. I was a bit depressed about it for a number of years. I have no idea of what happened to it after I left. It sounds like ( from reading this thread ) Jim Thomsen ended up with it again a number of years later? That's poetic justice since the Thomsens had put so much into it before I ever showed up, and I almost felt like me and Jones stole their share! I left to ski race and had some anti-materialism thing going on in my head but eventually got into making packs myself in Idaho, but that was after starting the Old Boise Bootworks with Ken Horwitz and leaving that.
