A few pictures from a recent caving trip to Roppel Cave, Kentucky - part of the Mammoth Cave System, the world's longest cave. We've discovered, explored and surveyed over a mile of new passage this past year, yet again.
Here I am "getting reborn" - the Birth Canal going into Low Tech Dome. It's a tight squeeze, and then you end up getting birthed four feet above the floor.
That's my 68-year-old caving partner, Dick. He is the baddest of the bad-asses. I wanna be just like him when we grow up. The way on is down the little crack below us, which opens to a walking-sized streamway.
Dick led a fifty-foot climb up a waterfall, and we reached a section of big streamway above. In a higher passage parallel to the streamway, we discovered all these neat stals:
These stalactites are covered with beautiful dogtooth calcite crystals. Pretty cool stuff we found. You're the first ever besides me and Dick to see these things.
Cheers, eh? See yous on the bridge this spring.

Bravo, Pete, I was hoping you'd post some of these.
This is why more folks don't cave.
Sheesh. ;-)

Wild stuff Pete. I had to run outside and find me some open space after seeing those photos... and I'm not claustrophobic!

Geez, those places aren't even particularly tight. The Birth Canal is just a bit awkward. Maybe you guys need a bit more airspace? How do you feel about swimming in 54F water?
You usually get about twelve inches of airspace when walking through the river, unless it rains outside. We got trapped beyond this point once for 33 hours when a sudden thunderstorm rolled through.

Yea, me too. If I have any kind of phobia, its got to be claustrophobia. My little brother locked me in a trunk once for a couple of minutes. I nearly sh#t my pants.
Hey Pete, you know some people say there are ancient but living civilizations still hiding under the earth's crust. Ever see any weird creatures down there? ha

Seems to me that there ought to be a tunnel from Brazil to
Mt Shasta. Plus the special Express Tube between Mt Shasta
and Santa Monica.
