Dear All,
Thanks for the memorial pics. I'm still crying for the man I met in '71 at SP. He left the ropes behind and our sport was never the same.
Just a couple words from JB and for him, before I go:
"Climbing is a journey of devotion. The environment, by its severity, dictates movements of the spirit." - John Bachar
"You don't try, you just do" - John Bachar
"Empty mind of all thoughts. Let your heart be at peace. Watch the turmoil of beings, but contemplate their return. Each being returns to the common source. Returning to the source is serenity. Not realizing the source, one stumbles in confusion and sorrow. When one realizes... tolerance, detachment, dignity and kindheartedness arise. Practicing the way, you are ready for whatever life brings." - Lao Tzu
"And when he is silent your heart ceases not to listen to his heart; For without words, in friendship, all thoughts, all desires, all expectations are born and shared, with joy that is unacclaimed. When you part from your friend, you grieve not;
For that which you love most in him may be clearer in his absence, as the mountain to the climber is clearer from the plain. And let there be no purpose in friendship save the deepening of the spirit.
For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun?
And what is to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered?
Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing.
And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb.
And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance."
-Kahlil Gibran
The Eagle
BY ALFRED, LORD TENNYSON
He clasps the crag with crooked hands;
Close to the sun in lonely lands,
Ring'd with the azure world, he stands.
The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls;
He watches from his mountain walls,
And like a thunderbolt he falls.
I spy a tiny hold
rest awaits
nothing but air below
my heart beats
I make the move
a smile takes over
I am consumed
joy again in this familiar moment
many don't understand why
I don't care
It's not to live or die
It's to live and dare
-Lee Jenkins
"Until one is committed there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that
the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favour all manner of unforseen incedents and meetings and material assistance. which no man could have dreamt would have come his way. I have learned a deep respect for one of Goethe's couplets:
Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it.
Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.
-W. H. Murray
From Everest, the West Ridge, by Thomas Hornbein
"Death will be an awfully big adventure." - J.M. Barrie
"We are all gonna die.....and when I go I hope it is on a rock" - John Bachar

RE: John Bachar, his memorial, and our future . . . Though I didn't know JB, we are the same vintage. I was in the little leagues on rock, always looking up to guys like the Stonemasters, and JB. I had my moments dancing with the gods, but I was just a mortal moving over stone, most of the time. I noticed as I read through the transcript of the memorial, someone played Amazing Grace on a sax. In my closing, did you know this hymn was penned by a pirate (arn't many climbers "pirates" in one form or another?), who "through many dangers, toils, and snares . . ." almost bit it many a time. Once he was drunk and disorderly aboard ship, and the captn' had him keel hauled (to be drung under the ship's keel for punishment while the vessel in under way). A rope broke, John Newton (author / pirate of AG) was floundering. The captn' had mercy on John, threw a harpoon through his leg, and hawled his ass aboard ship. Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wreck like me . . . We have had our asses saved many a time on the rocks. Sooner or later grace will lead us home. DS

Lynne, a couple of IDs
To the left of Johnny in the shades is Steve Claussen of Wave Rave snowboard shop. Thanks for the feedback on the sound system. In the photo by the water, back row from right: three of my kids; Lydia, Sierra, & Ethan then Dave and Autumn Talski owners of Mammoth Mountaineering Supply. Autumn taught my kids and Tyrus at Mammoth Elementary School. Tyrus and Lydia were always competing in math. They were way ahead of the rest of the class. Lydia is also the girl down by the lake behind the saxist statue. She was born three months after Tyrus and they were very close. They used to talk about getting married. Val told me that Lydia was Tyrus' first kiss. I haven't asked Lydia about it yet.

Thanks all for contributing to this thread. It is warming to see the compassion we have for our fellow humans. Memorials remind us that we are, after all, closer than we think we are are.
John's presence was greater than merely physical, his actions defined a generation. By soloing and taking a stance on protection he was instrumental in keeping climbing close to the roots forged by the pioneers of the sandstone towers of the Elbe River. He made us understand that we could climb at a high level and do so in manner which respects the medium. This is what I'll always keep close and hope to share with the younger generation.
On the day of the memorial I was in the heart of the Teton Range. The afternoon storm came in early and with a fair amount of power. Rain preceded hail, lightening seconds before thunder with a sky that highlighted the sublime. The peaks reveal themselves in a different light after a storm. As the evening cooled the clouds gave way to a clear night. The following morning the upper mountain was coated in a translucent layer of verglas. It was a reminder that we are guests in the mountains and that they are much stronger than we will ever be. I guess it is from this strength of the mountains that we draw our own climbing energy. Special, this game we play.
Tyrus - you're a fine young man. I look forward to meeting you.
Thanks again.

Good words Conrad, we too had a special day of weather...double rainbows arcing into the sierra's, cleansing rain shower at the end of the day, white pelican flying overhead. These mountains are a special place and we do get a better appreciation of their beauty from the prospective we see them. It was all sunshine during the talks, a day we could not have planed with the best of intentions.
Peace

Sounds and looks like a wonderful memorial.
I thought of JB many times in the last 10 days during a eastside climbing vacation that ended today at the Puppy Dome boulders.
What an inspiration!
