A surfeit of riches tonight. First Bruins v Habs, at 4:00 PM in Montreal. Montreal behind 3 - 2. Then Chicago v Vancouver at 7:00 PM, tied 3 - 3. Could be a long night in Mazama.
Rick was always a die-hard Habs fan, poring over day old newspapers every spring in the Valley to see how they were doing. Superbly, of course.
(Not sure why Bruce says Dryden wouldn't fight. He was a goalie. Goalies hardly ever fight.)

"note it's by the Reform a Tory party of Canada"
Can't trust them either: their anti-Ig ad did resemble actual issues.

Bruce, I must confess that it is shameful for me as a Canadian to admit that I really don`t care much about hockey. At least the NHL.
However during the gold medal olympic hockey game, I had been gigging in a jazz club, and when my gig was over I packed up my trombone and headed next door to the sports bar. With only a minute left, I had my horn in hand, ready to play O Canada, and then, well, you know......
Put it back, grab another beer, bite my nails, then Sid scored and up on the table I stood, belting it out with everyone singing. One of the few times I`ve actually heard Canadians belt out the national anthem thus.

Check out Alexandra Morton's blog http://alexandramorton.typepad.com
for a salmon activist's point of view on the British Columbia seats. Her list of candidates she favours isn't too unlike my own.
Obviously she (and I) have fear and loathing when it comes to the Conservatives.

It should be a decent game, but there's a lot of history to the Montreal - Boston game (on now), and it may be better. There don't seem to be any Norwegians playing for Vancouver or Chicago, so the Norwegian friends I'm seeing it with may not prefer either team, but just hope for a good game.
Hockey goalies sometimes are free with their stick work, but rarely get into fights. Usually a defenceman comes to the rescue. Goalies are heavily encumbered with equipment, less replaceable, and hitting one must be something like punching a pillow. They wear a lot of stuff to absorb impacts from pucks. Maybe Dryden never fought, but few goalies in the 1970s did, and usually not much. Maybe a bit of pushing and stuff in a mass brawl, but that's about all. Rick?
Dryden's famous stance was partly because as goalie for the best team, the puck was often at the other end, so he would stand with chin on the butt of his stick and watch. Partly also a pose, to intimidate the other team - he was a big guy. It wasn't related to his (non) fighting.

Back to politics, let the mourning begin.....ooohh the agony. Price was brilliant(as he should, being a good BC boy!) and it bodes well for next season if the Canadiens can get a center who can perform for $8MM and a defense that can stay healthy. Vinnie, you listening down there in Tampa town? Now, what about the last remaining Canadian team playing that hot bed of hockeydom- Nashville! Rinne vs Luongo...very good, yes?
So did Dryden ever run for office since he's a barrister or barrista or whatever you call lawyers? I'd vote for him. Of course I would have voted for Gump Worsley too. Maybe even Howie Meeker......

Yes, Dryden has been a Liberal member of parliament for the last seven (?) years, and for the first few years was a cabinet minister.
Too bad about the Habs - I hear it was a good game.

Bruce, I don't know your riding well enough, but it sounds like you should figure out which of the Liberal and NDP candidate is the better and stronger one, and vote tactically. Plus encourage all your friends to do so. If the order of the day is ABH, that's about all you can do.

It seems fairly likely that Obama will be a popular write-in candidate today. Any time you guys don't want him, just send him along. No birth certificate required.
Polls close in Newfoundland and the Labrador at 2:30 Pacific time, but the real news will begin at 5:00, as polls in Quebec and Ontario start reporting, and results from the Maritimes start to solidify. As there's a news media blackout on reporting the results in BC until 8:00 PM, when polls close here, hopefully some non-Canadian will helpfully post some of the results starting at 5:00.
Events like those yesterday in Pakistan do cause one to appreciate democracy, for all its faults.

Polls have now closed in B.C. It looks likely that the Conservative will win a majority, in the range of 160 - 165. The New Democrats are making historic gains, at about 30% of the popular vote and probably 100 seats or more. The Liberals aren't doing well, looking like about 30 seats. Bloc Quebecois wiped out, mostly by the NDP - which means the NDP will be half Quebec MPs. Should be interesting. The NDP and Liberals between them have over half the popular vote, so merger talks are just about a certainty.

Also in good news, it looks like the NDP prevented a Conservative sweep in Alberta, which like North Korea and Cuba has pretty much been a one party state for decades. And the Green Party may have elected its first MP, in BC.
