At this link the park service has historical data for opening and closing dates of Tioga Pass.

http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/tiogaopen.htm

Recently the only years that the pass has opened later than Memorial Day have been after winters much bigger than this one. 06,05,98,95

I'm going June 17th. There's a lot of snow this year, so it won't be memorial day, but it's not a July 4th type of year either.

They also always seem to open on a Wednesday or Thursday so I'm going with the 17th.

The snowpack this year is close to or above normal in a lot of areas. I think were looking at June 10

Here's some data to help make a guess. http://www.monobasinresearch.org/data/tiogapass.htm

The Wawona road crew is currently working on the Glacier Point Road, they started on Wednesday with one rotary, one loader and one dozer. As of Thursday midday, they had cleared about 1/2 a mile two lanes wide. Just under 9 feet of snow on the stake at Badger Pass and the snow is pretty deep on the road there. By the end of ski season, there are usually some bare spots out on the GP road, but not this year. I was just out to the Sentinal Dome trailhead in a snowcat on Wednesday morning. Usually it's a different crew that plows the Tioga Road. My guess is that Olmstead Point will be a delay as there is usually significant avalanche danger there.

Snow removal begins tomorrow (hopefully)!!! Here's to a warm spring, because it sounds like late summer is gonna be a bitch up on 120--30 minute road work delays they say. So, it sure would be nice to make a few trips over the pass before those shenanigans begin. Anyways, 107% of normal in those parts, so I'm guessing it's gonna take a warm sun to get the road open before June.

The Tioga Gas Mart opened on April 23.

HERE IS THE LATEST FROM THE NPS ON PLOWING OPERATIONS

FROM: http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/tioga.htm

There is no estimated opening date for the Tioga and Glacier Point Roads. These roads open as early as conditions allow. (View a list of opening dates from previous years.)

May 5, 2010

Glacier Point Road:
End location is Glacier Point.
Average snow depth is 5 to 6 feet.
Plowing operations will continue today
Note: If the Glacier Point Road opens for the season prior to May 28, it will be open Saturdays and Sundays only through May 27 (plus Friday, May 21) due to road work. No additional road work is expected after May 28.

Tioga Road:
Ending location: May Lake Pit, 26.6 miles from Crane Flat
Average snow depth: 8 to 9 feet
Plowing operations will continue today.

They are cranking this year. That sure seems far for how much snow there is.

I might be late with my prediction, which would be good because I have friends headed this way the week before my June 17th opening bet.

It's looking good for a Memorial opener. But bring your boards, there'll still be plenty to slide on.
TPR is aiming for June 10, even if the pass opens earlier.

the average opening day from 1933 to 2009 would be the 29th of May, this year... of course the standard deviation is something like 20 days... but the simplest minded analysis would put it on that day... which is a Saturday... they usually open on a weekday...

interestingly, the number of days the pass is open has gone up 1 day per year over that same time period... if you just fit a line to the data... maybe global warming is good for something!

I've been playing around with some analysis since this annual thread was started...

Basically I tried to use the snow fall values in April to predict the opening date for the pass. I found that the Snow Flat Station (SNF) has a fairly strong predictive value, taking the values since 1998.

I just updated my analysis for 2008 and 2009, found that 2003 and 2006 were discrepant so removed them from the analysis...

... the difference from the average opening day is then given by the formula:

delta-day = 0.0032*april_depth(in)^2 - 0.2339*april_depth(in) -11.486

giving an R^2 = 0.97785

The 2010 depth is 91" so this prediction is that the opening day is -6.3 days from the average opening day, which is 147th day of the year, this year it would be 5/28/2010

So the opening day prediction is Saturday 5/22/2010 give or take 3 days

Looks like they made it to Olmsted parking yesterday. I would assume that's as far as the plows will go for a long time if 8-9 feet of snow are sitting on that slab...

May 6, 2010

Tioga Road:
Ending location: Olmsted Point parking
Average snow depth: 8 to 9 feet
Plowing operations will continue today.

One theory is that the crew worked like dogs to plow out to Olmsted Point
where the views are great. Now they'll revert to normal government work speed
clocking lots of hours and enjoying the area, minus tourons.

The spinning snow chew-it-up thingie sure needs lots of maintenance after
clearing the road from Crane Flat to Olmsted Pt don'tcha ya know!

Hi all,

Could somebody remind me. Even though Tioga pass is
closed, does that mean 120 between 395 and Ellery Lake
is closed? I'm interested in getting to Tioga Lake
(above, west of Ellery Lake) and the Dana approach.
Is this section open? Anyone?

In other words, is there a gate that's across the road
down by the Mobil Station preventing travel up 120 from
the East? Thanks.

In other words, I want to hike or skin up to Dana from
Ellery Lake or higher. Say, next weekend. Can I get
to at least Ellery Lake already?

Go here:

http://www.caltrans.ca.gov/

and type in 120

and you'll get the current road conditions. Currently the road is closed 5 miles west of 395 (base of the grade) - Tioga Pass is 12 miles or so from 395. You can check back whenever you want to see if they've opened more of the road:

SR 120
[IN THE CENTRAL CALIFORNIA AREA & SIERRA NEVADA]
IS CLOSED FROM CRANE FLAT TO 5 MI WEST OF THE JCT OF US 395 /TIOGA PASS/
(TUOLUMNE, MONO CO) - FOR THE WINTER - MOTORISTS ARE ADVISED TO USE AN
ALTERNATE ROUTE

doubt the road will open to the gate much before it is open all the way, Edison has to replace the power line to TPR and Tuolumne, plus Caltrans is re paving Blue Slide to Ellery or so this summer. Expect delays.

Who wants to bike to the Valley the day before opener with me? Spend the night and either get a ride or take the bus back, if it's running.

Email on way Anna.

homan am I getting excited for Tuolumne climbing! It's been a long winter in the Basin and I just want to touch warm granite and see my favorite vistas.
