I do not know him or any of you.
It does not relieve me of any pain,BVB ruled.

condolences to his friends and family.
his contributions here were always great and memorable.
I've love to hear more about his clothing style and any stories behind the suspenders.

I've love to hear more about his clothing style and any stories behind the suspenders.
I know I asked Bob about the ubiquitous suspenders ...
IIRC it had something to do with his 27 inch waist and 39 inch inseam.
'Them drawers just never stayed up on his midline otherwise.
As to BVB's superlative fashion sense, I'll tool something up in a bit!

I am very saddened to hear this. Met him a few times in the 1970s in San Diego, but got to know him through his posts on ST: always good for a smile or a laugh, and he will be missed.
Sincere condolences to his children and family.

I used to interact (infrequently) with BVB back in the old boldering.com days..( I no longer frequent Internet forums...this will probably be my last post here..)
But his passing deserves remembrance..
He loved poetry..
This from Robinson Jeffers.
How long a rime since the brown people who have vanished from
here
Built fires beside you and nestled by you
Out of the ranging sea-wind? A hundred years, two hundred,
You have been dissevered from humanity
And only known the stubble squirrels and the headland rabbits,
Or the long-fetlocked plowhorses
Breaking the hilltop in December, sea-gulls following,
Screaming in the black furrow; no one
Touched you with love, the gray hawk and the red hawk touched
you
Where now my hand lies. So I have brought you
Wine and white milk and honey for the hundred years of famine
And the hundred cold ages of sea-wind.
I did not dream the taste of wine could bind with granite,
Nor honey and milk please you; but sweetly
They mingle down the storm-worn cracks among the mosses,
Interpenetrating the silent
Wing-prints of ancient weathers long at peace, and the older
Scars of primal fire, and the stone
Endurance that is waiting millions of years to carry
A corner of the house, this also destined.
Lend me the stone strength of the past and I will lend you
The wings of the future, for I have them.
How dear you will be to me when I too grow old, old comrade.
See ya later you awesome American legend..

I am going through the records to find climbs I did with Bob.
Found one good one.
We climbed 7th Heaven 5.9/10 on Oct. 22 1977.
Back then it seemed like pretty serious business to climb on the private property of the Cohn Ranch. Rumors were that climbers had been shot at and or had big mean dogs sicced (?) on them. We often heard shots fired in that vicinity and the day we climbed it was no different. When we topped out we heard shots and were sure we were the targets!
Needless to say we made great haste on the descent!

Bob and I had some great conversations about parenthood, love, divorce and oh yes Mt. Woodson finger cracks. I'm sad he's gone and sad I never had the chance to meet him in person. RIP BVB. Thanks for all the psych and inspiration over many years.
I always liked this photo of him cruising California Night 5.10a. Photo credit BVB collection, of course

Friend, I think that was one of Roy's shots from the 2007 Woodson Shindig. Here he is right after that ascent. Wow, just 10 years ago, he was still drinking in public, before his first rehab stint. He had a rough decade ahead.

The whole story arc of his life is epic, I've got some bits rattling around in my head I'll occasionally drop here over time.

Thanks for taking a crack at that photo attribution, Off.
Not mine, however, and not 2007.
If you take a close look, in the 2007 photographs, his hair isn't quite as tight and the pant color is lighter.
Went for a short walk in the high mountains today.
Thought a lot about you and Bob and MP when we were all younger.
It's bittersweet to think of our friend and to ponder his absence, but it's who we were and what we are, and it's all good medicine.
Soaking up gratitude like a sponge now, (that sponge is heavy with tears) –and making every breath count.

I had a little bit of denial, accepting that BVB had passed. After working through all these posts, I can now appreicate how much a part of our climing culture he was.
I always enjoyed his posts on ST.
My condolences to his family and friends.
My life is poorer, for having never met him.

Hadn't posted here...was bummed when Robs posted on Facebook. I didn't know Bob real well. Had a few good days bouldering with him in LCC. And more than a few interactions on the old bouldering.com.
Has wescrist chimed in here? He and Bob were fairly good friends. Hopefully he's gotten the news.

By Jove I think you're right Roy, almost identical outfit, but some time apart. Hair is not only looser but more gray, and the vegetation is different too looking at pictures - it was more lush when we were there in 2007.

Hair is not only looser but more gray…
Bob had been known to let his hair down on occasion.
