Was trying to find the video of the guy bouldering over a net to fall on, came across this. You live in a Mecca Ryan.

You can't really see the landing. Isn't it pretty much instant ass over teakettle down the hillside if you blow it?

Autopilot is actually pretty straight forward, and the holds are quite positive. It's some pretty fine gymnastic moves and committing up high, but dialed-in, it's some fun movement. I have seen people go for the Big Skate® by hitting the pad and taking it for a ride all the way down to the road. That said, with several brutes giving a trusted spot, it was possible to take the plunge without the additional excursion. But we were doing this—along with Tail Gunner and Flight Attendant—back before the Age of Mattresses, and never toproped! 😎

I like that .gif too, and the back-story there is that I needed to do that thing three consecutive times since Bolton couldn't properly figure-out how to work that new-fangled digital camera gizmo. Those were certainly primitive times… "They studied rules of verse/And those ladies, they rolled their eyes"

Back in the day
We bouldered without pads or spotters

in fact, if someone tried to spot me, I would shoo them away
and say "what do you think your doing, I might fall on you"

I did some of my best bouldering alone,
some of my favorite memories are from Black Mt.: above the heat, headphones, high ridges, black rock = nirvana

My first 5.11
Power Pack
Rubidoux
1976
TR with our new Goldline rope

I developed the photos in my high school photography class

My second day climbing ever was at Rubidoux,
and we were top roping some easy stuff off to the right
and along comes John Long in Galibier "Super Guide" boots that he says he's wearing for training for the Alps
Well course he fires the crux of Power Pack with ease and solos to the top 30 ft above
So it was a simple goal, Must climb Power Pack, but with a rope of course.
I ran into Largo many times again in my first noob years and he was a good inspiration for sure.

I solo it now, or did, of course.

When it comes to the history of Rubidoux
You have to mention the "Big Rock Boys"
Dimes and Henny

Dimes had all kinds of tennies he was using that had soft sticky rubber for awesome smearing
Weren't the scats one of the good ones?
That was before Fir'es,

Kevin was so into climbing shoes that he bought like 6 new pairs of EBs, just to have a future stock, days before the Fir'es came out. ouch!

Here is our beloved hero in full gala mode

Another of my favorite Rubidoux problems was "K.P.s Arete"
It's truly a classic but probably doesn't get much traffic,
like Power Pack, it helps to be tall.

Great stoke in this thread! thanks y'all. You're making me want to pack up, head south and live the simple life again til summer comes back to the high lonesome.

These are nobody's favorites who don't live in the upper Arkansas valley but there's a respectable circuit and generally just you and the fir trees:

This is how this thread makes me feel!
