There are a great many places on the internet where the kinds of discussions Ron most commonly posted on, or started threads on, are appreciated. SuperTopo is simply not the right venue.

I wish this popped up every time someone started a thread, kind of like Don't Be a jerk on that other site.

Thank you RJ for a reasoned response and a rational explanation.

I'm just wondering if the leg humping can now stop.
At least until the poison ivy abates.

Thanks RJ. Confirms what most of us thought. Suicide by cop, so to speak.

And yeah, Ron sure did get some people's knickers in a twist.

When a user complains about another user, we should analyze the previous 100 posts of the complainor and the complainee.

Thanks John for the suggestion.

But, I don't think we're going to adopt a policy of investigating the complainer with the same urgency we might use to look into a complaint.

Allow me to explain. Most complaints are about one or more specific posts, and thus can be evaluated by looking at the thread in question, at both the posts which we're flagged by a member as objectionable, and the broader discussion to see the build-up to, and after-math.

Chris generally prefers that we have a light hand in terms of moderation, and I think many members appreciate that. As a result, moderation is often only a result of receiving a complaint. As you know, we invite anyone to let us know if they find inappropriate content, and we make an effort to look into those complaints regardless of the source. However, one thing we do consider in such a complaint is the credibility of the person making the complaint, such as their length of time on the forum, the quality of their posts, etc. Complaints from long-time members who have made quality contributions are naturally given additional credibility as you would expect.

However, our focus in looking into a complaint is primarily on the content being complained about, not on the source. We admittedly do not energetically investigate the whistleblower, in the manner you recommend, and instead try to look objectively at the content being complained about. Please note that complaints are not given a knee-jerk reaction. Chris is not the kind of person who acts willy-nilly on a complaint, but he has a principled, light-handed, philosophy of moderation that is focused on the content posted on the site. If the content is the kind of thing that deserves some form of action (most often just deleting an inappropriate post, sometimes issuing a warning in cases of higher severity, and very rarely deactivating a member).

It is not uncommon for us to find multiple inappropriate posts, from multiple members, in the course of looking into a complaint. Frequently inappropriate posts occur when a discussion becomes heated and degrades into personal attacks. And, as a result, it is not uncommon for one complaint to result in the removal of multiple posts, with warnings issued to multiple members.

Thanks, RJ. Again, I gave my proposal largely in jest, but not entirely. I wondered if some of the people complaining about Ron's posts were living in glass houses and throwing stones. And DMT is right; Ron's erasure did not surprise me, but it disappoints me, particularly since he apparently chose to "commit suicide by cop."

As for TR's, I've been itching to get out so I can post a few, but an unusual number of family obligations, plus my infamous ability to attract bad weather when I actually have the time, has prevented anything but the gym for 2015. Once that changes, I'm in - although mine will be no match for Micronut's.

Cheers

I never complained about Ron to get him excluded.

But I have to admit that there are times when I think America is very strange. On one side, a twelve year old boy critizing the president and writing that he wishes him dead, can find armed police at the door minutes after posting the message on the internet. On the other side, Ron, an old man, can post a message on ST suggesting someone should drop an atomic bomb to kill 300.000.000 muslims, get no clear official reaction, and collect a lot of sympathy from many forumers when he is excluded.

Any time I can get free, DMT. I've only done it in climbing shoes, though - no roller skates or cross-country skis. When are you free? I should add that normally at this time of year, we need to start really early in the morning.

So this old guy had some weird sh#t laying around and posted it.

I wouldn't call anything I saw him post valuable, nowhere near Jello telling us first hand about the Eiger or somesuch.

Can't say I saw that many of his reported 100,000,000 posts, either, what a fuking waste of valuable time on this planet.

Good riddance, no loss.

RJ gets Supertopo Ambassador of the Year award for a long post saying basically the same thing I just said.

Cool!! Learned some etymology today;

A petard was a small bomb used to blow up gates and walls when breaching fortifications. It is of French origin and dates back to the sixteenth century.[1] A typical petard was a conical or rectangular metal object containing 2–3 kg (5 or 6 pounds) of gunpowder, with a slow match as a fuse.

If a petard detonated prematurely, the petardier would be lifted by the explosion.

JRig that was actually from earlier this year. After decades of bashing Unscathed through the toxic forests of poison ivy in the Black Canyon this was my first ever case. I got it from a branch just starting to bud in the Flatirons. It went Systemic for a while and really sucked. But I learned some valuable info. An inexpensive and effective product is Dawn for dishes. I'm going to add some to my 1st aid kit from now on.

It got pretty gross but I've heard other people's horror stories - like getting it in the eyes or lungs - that I feel pretty lucky all things considered.

Thanks for the explanation RJ.. If Ron asked that his material be deleted then that's the way it is. Disappointed but I respect it.

it's been done before, kiss off to ST. no one cares. heres the thing. if you quit ST you can't go back. But Rons seems so insecure and fearful that I'm sure he's peepin' in to see what people are saying about him. Really? deleted all his post? it's a climbing forum, lightin up dude!
