Interesting conspiracy theory linking an ex-con LA billionaire with a possible move to wrap up LA sports media

http://isteve.blogspot.ca/2014/04/magic-johnson-ultimate-cleanser-sports.html

Personally, I thought it likely to be a shakedown for break-up money excluded by the regular pre-nuptial agreements (ala Mel Gibson)

Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling has been banned for life and fined $2.5 million following the racist comments he allegedly made to his girlfriend, V. Stiviano.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver announced the penalties at a press conference on Tuesday (via Mark Medina of the Los Angeles Daily News):

I gotta say I'm kinda stunned. The nba did the right thing.

Whether they can make him sell is another matter.

I'm not stunned at all. This story was too big to be swept under the rug or to be "bought off". The Commisioner has the power to do what he did and wasn't affraid to use it. It was the right thing to do and the NBA will be better off for it.

... But he apparently still owns the team.

The ban is on involvement.

I've bumped into a few wealthy people in my travels and from what I've observed the $5M, while certainly not financially crippling, is going to eat away at old Mr. Sterling's psyche until the day he dies.

Another step in the right direction for America.

The bigots and hate mongers will find some way to spin this to make themselves feel better as they always do. It sure is satisfying to see the hateful old bastards backed into a corner squirming. Watching as they scramble to take issue in whatever ways they have left, clinging to whatever they can to preserve their antiquated ugly bigoted increasingly unpopular ideologies and ways is vindicating to say the least!

What these idiots fail to see is their resistance to change is only forcing those who will not tolerate hate to stand up and insist hate be irradicted.

not for long
NBA commissioner Adam Silver said Donald Sterling would also be forced to sell the team.
I'm sure the NBA believes they are on solid legal ground before making this statement.

or as Obama said yesterday:
"When ignorant folks want to advertise their ignorance, you don't really have to do anything, you just let them talk," he said.
Sterling at long last dug his own grave.

Both quotes from BBC

More accurate info from the LATimes (who outta know)
The NBA's bylaws allow for owners to be expelled from the league, though that power is reserved for limited circumstances, such as the inability to operate financially, gambling on league games or fixing games.
The more likely route, which Silver took, lay within Article 35 of the NBA Constitution, which allows the commissioner to indefinitely suspend owners for "conduct prejudicial or detrimental to the association."

There's the "you can't screw up the league's reputation" catchall.

Good point.
I wouldn't be surprised if there's a settlement where he agrees to sell the team, and doesn't pay the fine. I don't think such a settlement would necessarily ever be made public.

I hope he chokes on it, one way or another.

Can't wait to see the Clippers tonight, sans lizard face in the stands.

I expected the NBA to come up short or maybe juuust good enough. Woke up from my preshift nap to find them sinking a three pointer from half court. I also see that bluering has fled the thread.

Well, I'm glad to see this ugliness resolved. The guy is scum and deserves whatever falls on his head. Too bad it only adds up to big profit and tons of hookers for him, but we're rid of one nasty public figure.

CNN reported that the NBA bylaws allow the OWNERS ( not the commish) to force a sale with a 3/4 vote.

Looks like more drama in the offing.

So what? Getting him away from the NBA is still a great thing.

Like I said, everyone who matters likely feels he pissed on their season - no way he was going to get off lightly. The NBA's actions are great messaging on the topic for all concerned and makes the pointed statement money doesn't matter in the sport when it comes down to racism and bigotry. My guess is Silver would have walked if he wasn't given the latitude to bring the hammer down hard given this was forced on him and the NBA's formal response was going to define the rest of his reign.

To really hurt his business, other rich guys would have to boycott his real-estate dealings. Prolly not gonna happen.
It's LA and sh#t like this tends to socially stick folks who rub up against it even in the business world so there's likely to be repercussions over time there as well.

There sure is a lot of confusion about the first amendment. All it says is the government cannot come arrest him or shut his business down for what he said.

The rest of us citizens are welcome to do as we please on those fronts. If I were the NBA there is no way I would let that guy anywhere near an event in the future .. let alone hold a franchise.

86d off the deepend forever.

Called this one a few days ago as soon as I heard the news.

Nothing else the NBA could do. Nothing less could be acceptable.

I don't want to dwell on this, but Jerry Buss (to whom certain analogies can be drawn, rich white guy big ego, not ever accused of any manner of racism) died at 80. Sterling is going to die and the insult to his big ego has already been done and will only become worse.

Good thing to get him away from the NBA. He will be forgotten soon.
