Sara, The Karafa Family, The Acopa Family, Friends and Loved Ones,
You have my greatest sympathies, love, respect and support-- the same love and generosity of spirit and wellspring of friendship that Steve shared with us.
Steve, my friend, I will always hold you in highest regards and fondest of memories. Until I join you on the next Great Adventure, I will miss you more than words can say.
Your friend always,
Kin

What can I say about losing Steve? Nothing can replace him. We clicked immediately and spent our first night giving each other our life stories. During that night of stiff drinks and bad jokes, he told me about his great love for Sara and how she was his angel. He told me of his great respect and admiration for his father. We laughed over John’s quirks and teased each other about our own idiosyncrasies. We sat around that night sharing reveries and feeling the edges of our dreams reaching into reality.
During the trade show, we took joy in sharing our goals and celebrated as they surpassed our imagination. He was excited for he knew that he was making our present existence into one great adventure. All of us who shared it with him loved the ride and in each our own way loved him. We knew that all of us at Acopa had joined to be part of his family of dreamers.
That sundown in the aftermath of the car crash, Steve was still dreaming out loud when he left us. I watched the sky change into a thousand colors as the mountains lost their definition into a dreamscape. It was a sunset that never will be repeated again.
Unlike his dreams, he is now in a place where I can’t reach him.
I will never forget him or let his dreams fall into shadow. I am his witness.
If I can trade places with Steve, I would. If I could prevent John’s pain, I would.
My heart goes out to Steve’s family.
Right now I am working on recovering with John. We are still in shock, so please forgive us for not being very responsive. I will write a separate entry on a later date to clarify things and thank all of those involved with helping us.
Sending my best to all of you,
Thank you for your support, it is helping us through.

Sara, Betty, Big Steve and Lisa,
May you have the strength to get through each day. His absence has left an unbelievable void. We miss him, his generosity and kindness. He was a true friend. We don't have the words.

Saw another bit in a local NV paper - http://www.elynews.com/articles/2006/08/18/news/news04.txt
It scarily reminds me of having a friend ejected from the back seat of a vehicle I was driving at ~50mph during a rollover. I wish nothing but the quickest recovery for John and a confirmation that Steve will be remembered.

ughhhh... I can't believe the news I'm hearing. My condolences go out to Sarah and Steves family.
I've known Steve for about 8 years. We worked together a while back, but we would always bump into each other since at trade shows and the climbing gym. It was always great to see him..... high energy, positive additude, a great friend. Steve taught me how to fly fish a while back in Yosemite on the Lylle fork of the tuolumne river. Fly fishing has since become a passion of mine that I will always be thankful for. Steve... you were a great friend and you will be missed greatly by all.
rest in peace buddy
love KJ

Steve, Betty, Lisa and Sarah,
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.
Steve was an incredible person who filled everyone he met with joyful happiness. Whether you had just met him or had known him for almost twenty years he treated everyone with the same kind-hearted respect. He was a strong man with a very gentle heart.
Stay strong you guys, lean on each other and all of us for support.
Steve is gone, but he will never be forgotten! He's in each and every one of us who had the privilege of knowing him.
Rest in peace Steve, I love you.

Like many, I just saw John and Steve at the OR show. Once again I am reminded that we should all tell our loved ones we love them more often because you never know when will be the last time you will see them.
Let's all do MORE than our part to help out John and Anastasia.

It has now been a year since Steve Karafa died, so I thought an anniversary bump was in order.
I met Steve's parents and sister, and other family members and friends, at the recent Outdoor Retailer trade show in Salt Lake City. There wasn't enough time to talk and hear stories, but it's clear they're doing a good job carrying on Acopa in Steve's memory.
