Here's a real throwback: the same Black Velvet Canyon shot everyone else takes, except in this photo not a single route has been climbed yet. By the end of the day there was one.

Triassic Sands was the first route in the canyon, which we finished that day in 1972. At the time this place had been named Velvet Canyon, not Black Velvet Canyon, by Betsy & Joe.

The precursor to Epinephire was the bold Velvet Wall route, put up in 1973 by Joe Herbst and Tom Kaufman. It followed the modern Epinephrine line through the pitch above Black Tower -- very runout as they placed no protection bolts on that face (there are 2 bolts on it now), or in the chimneys as far as I know. Joe & Tom finished Velvet Wall by connecting with the big diagonal ramp instead of the steep bolted corners that now are upper Epinephrine.

Paul Gleason broke his wrist in the early '80s rapping off the Grand Canyon's Zoroaster Tower in the dark. Still, wearing the cast & Fires, here he is on the vertical crimps of Mt Pacifico's 5.10 face.
RIP tough guy.
