I'm with Werner. It made sense to be cautious until the nature of the account was clarified, which it has been. As far as I can tell, the account is still up, and as of Monday afternoon has a bit more than $2900 raised from 66 contributors. I hope Krista keeps it that way, as I said above.

My personal plan is to make several modest donations between now and the fund expiration date of January 31st, since I can't come up with much all at once right now. As for what Largo does with the money, I consider that his business, not mine.

If it helps him to gather his family around him, for example, that's cool. If lap dances turn out to have therapeutic effects, either real or placebic, then that's cool too, although in the latter case an article---in the style only Largo can manage---in the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation might be called for.

After my ACL reconstruction surgery last January, my insurance paid for three months of rehab. I'm now in month 10 and still doing rehab exercises, but of course without all the specialized equipment available from professional rehab places. So the last seven months I've been on my own, since I couldn't manage to keep paying for the service. (Mind you, I paid a deductible for every session while insurance was in force.) This hasn't been optimal (a pro athlete with the same injuries gets a year of rehab on a daily basis), but it has been ok.

John will almost certainly need far more rehab than I did for a relatively minor arthroscopic procedure that didn't even involve staying in the hospital overnight. How much he is able to do, and so the level of recovery he achieves, will be partially determined by what he can pay for after insurance for rehab is out of the picture. It is easy to say, as I did, that I've got this and can do it myself, but I can guarantee you that if more funds had been available, I'd still be going to rehab and maybe I'd be able to run and jump rope now, which I still can't do without pain developing pretty quickly.

My point with this example is, as my mother-in-law used to say, "rich or poor, it's good to have money." It affects your decisions and your health, even as you pride yourself on making your own way. Kicking in a little for John is, in my view, a gesture of decency and support whether or not he thinks it necessary as he lies in his hospital bed without having seen even a single bill yet, because "necessary" or not, the extra cash might still make a difference in the quality of his recovery.
looking sketchy there...

It with that idea that my wife and I donated. We completely concur with what RGold has written.

I started to write something similar, but then decided what Rgold wrote does a better job communication my thoughts better than I ever could. I agree with everything in his post 100%.

I have never met John. However, through his climbing books, he has helped to educate me about climbing and improve my technical competence. His other writing has brought me hours of joy. Giving something back to someone who has done so much for me is a no brainer.

Amen, to that.

I see a lot of talk about donating money to the chipin for John. Now that you all have figured out it"s legitimate put your wallet where your keyboard its. Its been stuck at $2915 all day. This is and was only meant as a stop gap measure to help out until something more could be organized. Help the man who helped a lot of us along the way.

Why would anyone choose to donate now, when a refund salvo is supposedly the works? It might be time to pull the curtains on this whole ChipIn event in favor of something less clusterf*#kish in the future.

Russ, the future is now. Waiting for something better to come along dose nothing to help in the short term.

Umm... not according to Long, in his own words:

Any "fund" was done without my knowledge and while no doubt well-intended is not the way to go. Nobody just gives money to a slush pot for people to spend on hot rods and lap dances or whatever.
Such a plan if needed will be way later. But I appreciate the thought.

I don't want to go off on a rant here, because I actually think you guys are trying to do a good thing. But.... This whole deal has been f*#ked up from the get go. And you now show up with your first post begging for more wallet action. Who exactly are you speaking for? Largo? He said to hold off. You guys should shitcan this circus, and either refund in totality to those that have given, or hand the wad to John and back away from these forums. Yer not cut our for it, and nobody here knows you. Put a can out in the gym or go all Facebook wacky and raise all you want swimming in waters known to you if that is what you want to do. If ChipIn or anything similar is going to work on this type of Forum (SuperTopo, Mountain Project, etc) , someone who is familiar to most other forum members and obviously associated with Largo will have a much better result spearheading the fundraising. And that is IF Largo is into such a thing. The last I read is he is NOT, yet your efforts are continuing.

Hey.. this is getting sorta rant worthy... anyway, good on you guys for trying to help, but it might be time to just stop IMO.

Russ,

Too factual to be a rant and well said.

After speaking with JL I am leaving the chipin up for now. I decided to listen to the majority and not the couple lone wackadoos. Russ no one spearheads their own fundraiser from their hospital bed. It's also super rude to tell someone they are not cut out for this forum. The chipin was fine until all the rants started that is why I tried to keep it off these sites and focus on Johns close friends. Again this is for immediate costs and hopefully is just the tip of the ice berg. I spoke with John today and he is very appreciative of everyones contributions. I was at the hospital while he had the first emergency surgery as was Chris Wilson. We saw our friend in need and took action. Today he had a procedure to map all of the veins in his leg because unfortunately he is going to require a skin graft to cover the open wound in his leg. For those of you who personally know John then you know he does not have a disposable income. He has two daughters that he has put through college including graduate school and struggles to make ends meet just like the rest of us. So that being said if you wish to donate please do so if not I ask that you respect our effort and see the bigger picture. All of this really can't be good for the healing process. In retrospect there are things I would of done differently, but this is where we are at now.

Krista, I did not say he would spearhead his own fundraiser. Read closer.

As for rudeness, TFB. I don't know you and your initial posts on this forum were meltdown material. I think you even called out a longtime poster for a catfight. I stand by my posts and my thoughts on YOUR fundraiser. I can tell already we ain't gonna get along, so I'll leave it at that.

Sorry Russ I didn't realize I had to be somebody who Is "known" on this forum to try and make a difference in a friends life. I'll just go burry my head in the sand and be a good little bitch so all you big shots can talk about doing something.

There's my rant!

I agree Russ. I should have directed my first post at you and not crimpgirl. You can dish it out, but you sure can't take it... I went back and read her posts so accept my apologies please.
