Hi Lolli! I've spent time in Toronto, and have relatives there. Nice enough place, nothing very special perhaps. September is often a nice month there. In a half day, there may not be an awful lot that you can do. It takes about an hour on transit (bus, then train) to get from the airport into the city centre. You could certainly go in, walk around a bit, maybe see some sight or other or get something to eat. I'll think about it, and if I come up with any bright ideas, will let you know.

If you are there for a full day, plus an afternoon/evening, there may be possibilities.

Hmmm... Still no response for my request yet. I just resent a third time (I'd resent a few weeks ago to Lindsey; also sent a PM to Ken then). Hopefully third time's a charm.

I also checked the spam filter that my ISP provides on their end to no avail.

I let Lindsey know that some weren't sure if their requests had gotten through, and asked her to check here. It may be that she's still working on it all, juggling requests and openings. Plus Rocky Mountain National Park is a busy place in the summer.

Lolli, if you arrive in Toronto in the afternoon, then have that afternoon and evening, plus the whole of the next day, that'd be enough time to have a look around. Transit is decent in Toronto, and good in the central part of the city. It's also a safe city, with exceptions. There are lots of the usual sorts of tourist attractions, which you can find via google, or the tourist bureau's website. No suggestions on where to stay, as I usually am with relatives.

Toronto isn't a very old city, but even a good walk around downtown on a nice September day will be interesting. Despite its reputation, it's not quite as boring as it used to be. I like Toronto Islands, the science museum, and the historical enclaves scattered about the city. The ravines that cut through the city are also interesting, such as the Don Valley.

If you can't stand it, you could always do a day trip to Niagara Falls. As Mark Twain said, the second big disappointment of many bride's first wedded night. Although the Niagara Escarpment, of which Niagara Falls is a (watery) part, is very nice. It's about 90 minutes northwest of the city, quite natural, lots of walking and climbing.

I think it was in 1957 that I and three band mates stopped in Hamilton while on the way to Toronto's indoor piobaireachd competition. Being students we slept on the beach. About 3AM an officer fitted out in an immaculate uniform and bearing equally spotless demeanor woke us up saying, "Gentlemen, sleeping on the beach is not permitted. You will have to move on."

That incident became my definition for how a successful culture works. It remains so. And the competition was a real education for the four of us.

Thanks Mighty Hiker. I too suspect this is just a result of summer busy times!

Nice article ( http://adventuresportsjournal.com/climbing/yosemite-gets-a-facelift ), but it doesn't mention this:

We have free camping for about 350 Facelift volunteers in Yosemite Valley this year.

My gosh, Ken. What a great thing you've done.

Checking in again here... still haven't heard anything from Lindsey or anyone else.

Maybe Ken or she will see this here. Just resent my request as well to the hotmail account.

Hoping it all works out!

I may have to bail.

Lost my job, so not much income coming in.

If I can't make it my campsite is up for grabs.

I'll have a better idea of whether I can make it or not in a week or two.

All the best to you Brandon... these things have a way of working out. Sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees; these turns can actually prove quite good when view from a higher perspective.

Hope to meet you at Facelift!

Yet another facelift I won't be making it to. But let's face it, I doubt I'd make it out of Chinese Camp. Good luck everyone!

Hello,

Please be patient with the camping. Lindsey is doing her best to keep up. We still have space available in Upper Pines. It is a matter of keeping up with all the emails. It is a very hard job and that is why I am glad she is doing it. I will be helping her soon.

On another note. Heather has asked me whether there might be any interest in Yoga classes in the mornings at Yellow Pines. Any interest? She teaches it and it is nice of her to offer.

Evening programs are almost together. We will have Reel Rock Film Tour of course. Other programs will include Conrad Anker, Mark Wellman, and Alex Honnold and live music. Once I have other presenters nailed down I will post that information. Timmie O'Neil will also be in the mix.

Hope to see you there.

Ken

Thanks, Ken. Coordinating the camping, and then managing it, reminds me of the one about the iceberg. Except I can't remember if it's because most of the effort is below the surface and invisible, or because an iceberg may be lurking in the Merced, waiting to sink the SS FaceLift.

Suffice to say that there are things going on, but that it takes time, and has to be fitted into Lindsey's work and life. (Plus she's going on an exchange to the Tatra for the second half of September.) It sounds like there's still some camping available, or at least unallocated, and no doubt those who haven't heard so far would like to, soon. So take heart!

It would be cool to see Glen Denny and Ed Cooper speak on the FA of the Dihedral Wall, on its 50th anniversary. The third route on El Capitan. Any chance, or will that maybe be another time?
