Do you have any kind of plan yet on what type of roof that is going to be built, materials and permits needed, and associated costs?

How deep are the eaves?
What sort of overhang will be provided by cedar shakes below the starter course?

Huh?
It's a simple question and it's my trade I ask about.
I'm curious to hear how it's done in drier climates.
BTW, Pearlclutcher? I don't even know what that means, but it seems derogatory. Thanks.(I can edit my posts too :))

Heh, typical anglo response.
Wait for the trip report if you really need to know.
It's roofing, knot rocket science.

GS,
Ok, thanks for the update.
I know nothing about roofing, and i was just trying to find out how much of an investment this was going to be.
Glad you got it handled.

True, but I don't have enough fingers and toes to count the number of hastily or ignorantly installed roofs I've replaced.

Some of the UBC was posted earlier showing that there should be a 19" over lap on the underlying water resistant layer. I have seen composition shingles on one roof at a slope of 1/12. There the shingle overlap was reduced to four inches. No leaks. Penetrations are usually the problem.
When I stripped off a twenty five year old roof in JT I found all the tar based materials had been fried and were like paper. It is important to get the nail pattern dense so an old roof does not blow off. Based upon the topography the wind at that site should come more or less from the SW.
When stripping Todd's roof the cause of its failure should be apparent. Few to no nails?
One nail per tab?
The sun also destroys the ability of wood to hold nails. Edging pulls away from the rafter ends. Put on new edging if there is any doubt. You can get non wood products for the roof edge that, though pricey, seem to do better. Last roof I doubled the rafter end, stayed away from wood grain that would twist or check and used nothing but screws. Place screws well away from the edge of a piece of wood. And drill baby drill. Very important I think. I even used washers on southern exposures.
Best answer? Stucco the whole eve.
From what I have seen stain beats paint all hollow. Stain is where it's at.

GORDON FAMILY FUNDRAISER BUMP
BIG PARTY AT THE GORDON RANCH APRIL 21/ 2012
Once again, we are trying to raise some money to fix the roof at THE RANCH.
EVERYONE IS INVITED! Including Stonemasters, Uplanders, wanna-bes, Sheep Buggerers, those mysterious folk from San Diego, RADs, Banditos, Valley boys, Euros, Asians, Latinos, Mazamas, Vulgarians, Buff Alpine clubbers, Sierra Clubbers, American Alpine Clubbers and even Canadians and Newfoundlanders, not to mention people from Florida.
In the continuing philanthropic tradition we will be having a giant party at The Gordon residence on April 21/2012. This year the goal will be to put a new roof on the main house at The Gordon Ranch. They have one messed up roof with multiple leaks. The roofing crew of motivated locals is already set. We just need money for materials.
Most of us know Todd Gordon, AKA "The Mayor of Josh," as one of the most giving humans in the So. Cal climbing community for the last 30 or so years. Chances are you have stayed at one of Todd's houses more than once while visiting Joshua Tree for it's world famous climbing....or you've climbed one of Todd's many, many classic and not so classic routes.... or maybe he even taught you to climb. I myself have been his guest more times than I can remember. We've showered, pooped, watched TV, camped, used the kitchen etc. there while visiting Todd, his family and our beloved Monument (JTNP).
This party is in the beginning stages of planning but we expect to have food and a raging band “Warsaw” to augment the festive fun social scene. We may have a slide show as well.
BYOB booze.
We are looking for volunteers to help with food, setup and cleanup.
READ THIS PART! We are looking for cash and material donations. Cash in any amount is good. Material donations should be things that can be sold for cash. I will have a continuing sale/auction as this thread develops.
Please feel free to call or e-mail me regarding any questions you may have about this must attend event.
You can send cash, checks, money orders and material donations to

Coz,
Yeah, I'm offering to fly cross-country and work like a dog roofing a house for someone I only know vaguely from the Internet, yet care about, as well as meet people I'd like to meet and I get treated like an as#@&%e for the offer.
Sounds like fun.

I understand and appreciate the interest in the roof by you pros out there. I also hope it is done well. I have confidence in the lead guys ability to make sure it is done correctly and I hope the rest of the crew can follow direction.
I would love to put you all in touch with them so you could have a giant pow-wow but I doubt that is going to happen.
Have faith.

I am on the list and sending a check to Dave today. I have limited roofing experience beyond "More Monkey Than Funky" but I have torn off old shingles and composite, and am able to do some grunt work.
