Today is his birthday? I'm honored, it's mine too. Sniff.

Took his idea and put some of my sons ashes in my chalk bag.

Hey Paul, been on my annual Fall Peregination Tour waiting on ski season to start. We've been all over the place hiking, climbing and MTB. I've left a little of you behind in The Gorge, Indian Creek, Red Rocks, Castleton and Fisher Towers, Wall Street, Ice Cream Parlour and Arches.
And guess what, sitting here with my cuppa...it's never far from me, nor is your memory and spirit that carried me through the darkest of my days!

I am sad to report that Paul's wife, Ruth aka Gym Birdwall, has passed away ironically from the same type of cancer. She died on December 21, 2012. The cancer attacked her brain and they gave her less than 2 months to live when she found out. She was gone in less than a month after I was informed she had cancer. She was the one who distributed "Paul's Balls" and I don't know if my Dad will be taking up that task for any future requests.

I am thankful for Ruth and all she did for Paul and for her willingness to start up "Paul's Balls" in his memory. I am glad that many took the opportunity to spread a little Paul around all over the world and take him on their adventures.

Hey Neebee, thanks for the condolences.

If anyone has a request for a Paul's Balls maybe email me and I can see if there is a way to continue this on for the future. I find it so special to read the stories of where people have taken him after death. It truly touches my heart and spirit.

I don't know if more Paul's Balls will be made, but if I can figure out how to keep this going I will do it.

Thinking of you Paul and now Ruth. It seems like just yesterday that I caught up to the two of you in Berkeley.
Cruised along the base of El Cap and thought that might be a good place to leave a "trace". Didn't bring jumars or aiders so you are just at the start.

Missing you both,

Susan

I am running my first full marathon soon and I would like to raise money for Melanoma Cancer research in memory of Paul and Ruth. My goal is $40 per mile for the 26.2 mile long run. If you would like to help with a donation and sponsor a mile, or half a mile, or a quarter of a mile just click on the link. Thanks!

Paul bump...

On Friday, 9/27/13, I left some of Paul on the summit of Kilimanjaro. Taking him there was part of the drive I needed to keep going the last thousand feet or so.

July 29, 2011 Paul passed away after a painful battle with metastatic melanoma cancer. I wish I was a climber and could reach out to you all somehow. Thank you for those of you who participated in the "Paul's Balls" thing... that was and is still so very cool! I would like to one day have my Dad bring the rest of Paul's ashes to Joshua Tree and have a memorial service and invite the climbing community out to spread the rest of him in his favorite place to climb and explore. I have no idea when that would happen, but its been on my mind.

All I can do right now is run, for him and Ruth. In their memory I raised over $1450 for melanoma cancer research by running a marathon March 2014, at the LA Marathon. Now I created a "Virtual Birthday Run" to continue to raise money for melanoma research. It's my new mission in life, to bring awareness to this type of cancer and encourage people to get their skin checked every year and to keep doing self exams on your skin every few months.

The info for the fundraiser is at www.virtualbirthdayrun.blogspot.com And if you feel so inclined to donate or to participate by hiking and counting your miles towards the 13.1 miles for the medal, please feel free to do so. I run 13.1 miles on my birthday. I did it for the first time on my bday last year, this year I am making it into the best birthday gift I could receive... donations for the Melanoma Research Foundation www.melanoma.org

Take care of your skin! And in Paul's words, "Belay on!" (hope I spelled that right! lol)God bless!

Vegas Climber, that is so very very very cool! I love it! Brings tears to my eyes to know that people cared enough about him to carry him so far with them in the climbing adventures. I am sure he is happy in all the places he has been so far!

I wonder when I could get a group to gather in his memory in Joshua tree to spread him around there and maybe let people take some with them in their chalk balls to continue the "Paul's Balls" adventures! That would be cool! I think its time to give the rest of Paul over to the elements, release him into the air, and grind him into rocks all over the USA/world.

If there is any interest let me know! Perhaps just email me: yllw2lip@yahoo.com Since I don't often come back to this forum.
