SUP on the lakes is a good workout but it for sure lacks the fun that you have at the breaks. SUP is awesome becuase you can surf your local breaks even on the small days when no one else can catch anything. You can also get way out there! I've paddled out to an oil island, you can't do that in Truckee! I've been so close to Dolphins that you could almost reach out and touch them. They are huge close up. My friend was out on his SUP and a young blue whale swam right under his board. He said it was the most frightening narly experience! Another SUPer was racing in the Bu and was bumped by a whitie. Another friend of mine was out in Hawaii and spotted a large dorsal fin moving in a straight line just over the swells! Boring is not the right word for SUP!

O-Man...that image you posted....do you think that was a great white? I'm betting it was if he was in Cali. That image would be framed on my wall if it were me! That's awesome!!

I think it is lame. Do something cool.
My team is developing an "Atmospheric Surfing" device. It more or less one of those round snow sleds from Wal Mart covered with abblating material.
Need a volunteer.

Our kids have been doing this for years.
It's something to do with a sailboard when there's no wind -
take off the sail and use a kayak paddle....

Hey, everyone was laughing at the snurfers, until a certain Mr. Burton showed up at the 1979 snurfing world championship with a snurfboard with bindings. Now the snurfboarders are laughing at us old farts on planks. You will see, just wait

Kinda looks like you can make it boring or not. UP to you.
And your knees don't hurt at the end of the day.
an ad for Rusty boards, but this guy doesn't look too bored:

Would not call this boring. I spent some time here during grad school, would not want to be sharing this break with paddleboards.

Those Truckee PD boards were donated.
Did a little more SUP last week. Pleasant enough distraction, but still don't get the craze.

Tahoe SUP, the company that donated those boards to the Truckee Sherrif, should have included some bags for those boards. If those boards sit on top of those vehicles all summer, just waiting for to be used for an emergency, they will be sun damaged badly. Of course this probably goes against the marketing end of the donation.
I don't want bash on Tahoe SUP as they are a good local company. I have sold them in the past, and own two of their baords myself.
YEs SUP can be boring if you make it so. I paddle quite a bit on Tahoe in the summer and have learned through paddling just under 1,000 miles on the lake that it has some cool aspects.
Early morning sunrises half way out on Tahoe are spectacular. Followed by a north morning thermal upwind run for an hour. Once the thermal dies out the lake goes to glass and you can keep paddling, or just relax and swim. Once the West winds kick up it blows me back to where I started (Zephyr Cove)
Wait for passing boats out of Zephyr and Glenbrook can produce some good waves. As the waves approach shore they pick up in size and you can ride them all the way up to the private beaches. Glenbrook is especially good because the rich folks have big boats. the bigger the better. Boats pulling water skiers can also produce rideable waves. Edgewood works well for finding water skers.
The Tahoe Queen puts out a series of big rollers about a 1/4 mile behind it that would be really good on a shorter board. I have ridden it on my 14' and it is a bit too long. Doable but alot of work. These rollers can be big 3-4', but most importantly they have speed. I am going to get a 9' surf style to ride these rollers. You could ride these all the way to Emerald Bay wait for the Queen to go in and catch thers rollers back.
On windy afternoons which is almost everyday on Tahoe in the summer. I sometimes paddle out of Zephyr Cove around 6pm and paddle straight into the waves. After an hour and a half, flip it around and you get a 30 minute paddle/surf ride in. Look for the big whithecaps they travel in packs of two or three. If you lock into a good set like 3+ foooter you can surf for 30 seconds or more. I am sure the crew on the Woodwind think I am crazy.
The winds in the summer primarily come from the west. With a good forecast you can ride the wind to where you want. If it is going a different direction you can be in for a battle literally. With good conditions you can paddle from Zephyr Cove early in the morning to Emerald Bay with nice calm water. Wait there for the afternoon winds and surf/paddle all the way back. It takes around 3 casual hours of paddling, less if you don't take breaks, to do the crossing. With a good wind my record is 1 hour 8 minutes coming back. Big long rides that day. Maybe a minute or so on some whitecaps.
Full moon paddles are fun, but more about just floating around staring at the moon.
There are many races all summer, but I don't really like scenes like that. PLus your board can get thrashed with that many people trying to do buoy turns. I do enjoy the Fall Classic which is heald every September on Tahoe. It goes from Camp Richardson to King Beach. 22 miles. I have done it for the last three years and my best time is 4 hours 19 minutes.
Also if you want to get strong, this will do it. Not just your core, shouders, and foremarms-but your feet get worked. After a big paddle day, I can hardly put wait on my feeet when I first wake up the next day. And your balance will improve.
I take music, snacks, water, leash, and a inflatable PFD. Music being very helpful.
Anyways that is way too much spraying about SUP!! Here are a couple of pics-
