My first job was at a place hiring only persons with a doctorate. That said as a manager I had to let go three people with doctorates who had no interest at all in original work. And I hired quite a number of asian immigrants who were like gold. I retired convinced it makes no sense to make full time hires.
In many positions personal energy and willingness to try count for more than degrees. Indeed having three or four masters is a count against one.

Excuse me now, I'm getting ready for a scuba trip to a luxury resort in the Turks and Caicos Islands, where I'll contemplate how much better off I would have been with just a high-school education
Did they make you take the elitist wanker pill or were you born that way. Good riddance to the 1% priveleged white dicks. F*#k academia for that reason exactly. Entitlement defined. (Enjoy f*#king up the corral reefs one percenter.)
Why don't you vacation to Guayaquil where you can be the .001%. Will you still feel so superior. Probably so,huh? What.A.Waste.

Yes, a good college will teach you critical thinking, problem analysis, and communications skills. All of which are very valuable in the working world, almost no matter what job you choose.
Can these be self-taught? Sure. How often does it happen? Infrequently I would guess.

Tiger Mom? Does that mean Asian? There is elitism everywhere and the more social inequity there is, the uglier it is. Are you trying to make a point because it wasn't clear. Good luck deciding who is crazy before they go crazy.

"Kids with mental health problems have no business in college."...
Could it be that the intent here was that these kids would be better served enrolling in the ST Forum?
"Tiger Mom (Mother)" is a book. The author is an Asian mother interestingly enough.

Stephens is just echoing the Victorian social utilitarian anti-intellectual arguments of Jeremy Bentham. So middle class, so bourgeois! As if the whole business of life is just about "getting on" and buying a house in 'burbs with a new washing machine and high-efficiency toilet!

I was a late bloomer, and finally got my degree at 59 years old.
I truly enjoyed my time there, even while I was working full-time.
I learned lots, had some incredible professors, and wouldn't
trade the experience for anything.
