Blue - I understand your desire to have a curricula that is more to your liking. I am the first to admit that I am unaware of exactly what the Fed Dept of Education does - I mean, it's huge. One thing that is clear and easy to find in even a cursory search is this:
/begin copy and paste
What Is Not Part of the Department of Education’s Role?
In creating the Department of Education, Congress specified that:
No provision of a program administered by the Secretary or by any other officer of the Department shall be construed to authorize the Secretary or any such officer to exercise any direction, supervision, or control over the curriculum, program of instruction, administration, or personnel of any educational institution, school, or school system, over any accrediting agency or association, or over the selection or content of library resources, textbooks, or other instructional materials by any educational institution or school system, except to the extent authorized by law. (Section 103, Public Law 96-88)
Thus, the Department does not
* establish schools and colleges;
* develop curricula;
* set requirements for enrollment and graduation;
* determine state education standards; or
* develop or implement testing to measure whether states are meeting their education standards.*
These are responsibilities handled by the various states and districts as well as by public and private organizations of all kinds, not by the U.S. Department of Education.
/end copy and paste
My reading of this, and please if anyone is an expert, correct me if I misinterpret, is that the Feds do not develop curricula. It sounds like these are state-level functions by a variety of agencies.
Blue, does this mean you wish that your state shut down it's dept of ed and related entities? Genuinely curious.
edit: my copy and paste from the Ed.gov site caused all these bolds. I didn't do them and don't intend them to represent anything I'm trying to emphasize.

My father was the Senior Research Engineer for Raychem Corp., the guys that invented polymers with 'memory' among other things. He didn't even have a Bach. Degree. He did take college math and science classes, as they were in those days. What he did have, and he passed it on to his children, was the ability to educate himself and a corresponding desire to learn. If a person has these qualities, it doesn't matter how bad the educational system is for them, they will seek the information that they desire. It is even easier these days with the access to computers, I just wish my father could have lived to see the internet. He would have been both amazed and saddened.

Crimpie, do you really want FED gov't to dictate curriculum???
Or should they be FORBIDDEN by law to do so? Should it be up to States to determine their curriculum?

You ask, and I failed to quote properly: Crimpie, do you really want FED gov't to dictate curriculum???
I'm not stating what I prefer because I know far too little about it all to make an informed decision right now.
My post above indicates that that the Feds ARE prohibited by law to dictate curriculum. It states that states do it for themselves.
So my question was given that the Feds DO NOT dictate curricula, and are prohibited from doing so now and always have been, is it really the state level agencies (public and private) that you want shut down? At least California's since I assume those are the policies you are most familiar with.
Sorry if I wasn't clear initially.

Kinda like old folks homes.
Where the old guys sit around arguing as to which of them is getting more girls.
The dialog stays the same as it was when they were 18.
It just gets funnier and funnier.

Should anyone, let alone any American, go through life believing in largely imaginary enemies, greedy, unwilling to learn, and easily manipulated?
The US certainly has its issues, one of which is improving its education system. None of the threats regularly harped on on SuperTopo would even make the top ten list of any informed person, in terms of public policy. The real issues are things like sustainable economic policies, at both personal and governmental levels; weapons of mass destruction in the wrong hands (Iran, Israel, North Korea, Pakistan - take your pick); global warming; global overpopulation; public infrastructure; international cooperation; public education, in both the broad and focused senses; the environment and sustainability; and maintaining liberal democratic institutions.

Bluering will identify with this one, he has stated that he is a "birther".
And he has called me a "devil" and a "Communist".
One thing I do give Blue, he is not afraid to say how he really feels!

To answer Philo's original question:
Because ignorance in America is subsidised and rewarded. And brilliance ( if it makes any money ) is punished.

you might want to add Energy Policy to your list MH.
Fattrad says Bluering is right 85% of the time, but on the other hand Fattrad is wrong 87% of the time.....so how often is Bluering right?
I've already had a glass of wine tonight so I can't be expected to do the calculation.
