If you look close, you can see the Euros falling out of the ref's pockets!

Still, the US controls its own destiny. All signs are pointing for the US and England to advance with 5pts apiece. Slovenia will go home with a proud 4pts.

Sound confident? My toes are crossed as I write this.

Gotta admit, it was disappointing having a certain goal
disallowed. But the US controls it's own destiny.
It has to go into the Algeria game thinking it's back home
for another four years if they don't produce. Algeria looked
pretty good today. If the yanks aren't on their game, it'll be
a sad day.

wbw, aye! This year I've learned something about the game, and all of a sudden watching it is exciting. Even though last time I played soccer I was 5 years old. :-)

OT: Also, see "Football and Chess" by Adam Wells. He argues that a lot of these games elements are the same (soccer from the coach's point of view, obviously). You may say that nobody watches chess matches on TV. But they used to show them in Soviet Russia! Seriously. And to this day, people watch Go games on TV in Japan and Korea.

ya good post wbw. IMO, soccer is a bit like climbing...totally boring if you don't know the nuances or ever participated.

World Cup 2010: Cape Town

Deflated after their listless performance against Algeria, England's players were given Saturday morning off to relax or take in the sights of Cape Town.

Outside the team's exclusive Vineyard Hotel, a group of camera crews and photographers waited to capture those players brave enough to venture out.

Others, like Wayne Rooney, remained holed up inside. After his frustrated outburst at the many England supporters inside the stadium who expressed their anger at England's display, the Manchester United striker was rather more camera shy the morning after.

England manager Fabio Capello was the first to leave after breakfast, taking a car just after 0900 local time. He has a lot to reflect on after seeing his meticulous plans for this World Cup go so wrong.England coach Fabio Capello vents his anger during the match against Algeria

Having exuded such confidence during qualifying and such certainty in his own methods, the Italian - a winner of nine league titles in Italy and Spain - is giving off the air of a man in personal crisis in what is his first World Cup as a coach.

His body language as he came off the pitch at half-time last night spoke of utter befuddlement at how a group of players with such large reputations could be shrunk in the face of supposedly weaker African opposition."

Man... there is a bunch pride in this game...

One reason why there have been so many ugly ties at the World Cup.

It will be Father's Day on Sunday.

Maybe they kiss their sisters or something.

Brave play from the Aussies yesterday after another abysmal ref job
and equally laudable play from the Kiwis today.

The barn-burner between Brasil and Cote d'Ivoire is about to start!
Love me some samba but I also love Les Elephants and the incomparable Didier Drogba - the best finisher on the planet.

Me thinks the ejection of Kaka is caca. I did not see a swing taken...

Either way I was glad to see Ivory Coast score in what was otherwise a brutal massacre.

French ref totally bought the acting job by Keita - what a joke.
He also missed Fabiano's double handling of the ball prior to
his second goal. Nullifying that would likely have changed the whole
flow of the game although the Ivoirians' shockingly bad defense would
have ultimately let them down. They have such great skill but sorely
lack discipline and make so many speculative plays on offense and defense.
Drogba had only two good touches and scored on one.

After today I am sticking with my pre-tourney prediction of Brasil to win it.

thats too funny

all this really means is that USA is still in it... they would need to win more often... but they are still in it.

thats all...

If the USA wins, they advance. If the USA draws, then there are a few ways to still advance based on the outcome of the upcoming England match.

The refereeing has been badddd. That Brazil game was awful. Obvious handball lead to one goal and an obvious dive led to a red card. Not Good.

I'd say it is worth having a quick replay system that could be used in cases of cards and goals. And have a group of uninvolved officials review fouls after the game. Players who are found to have blantantly taken a dive(for instance going down with hands to the face after being tapped on the arm) will get banned for the next match. That will stop some of this diving.

That said, this is turning out kind of interesting. Of the favorites, only Brazil, Argentina and Netherlands have won both games. England, Spain, Germany and Italy are in trouble, though all will probably make the next round. The French are toast and imploding. Sorry that the Irish aren't in their place.

Perhaps if they just gave seven points for each goal it would be more exciting for real Amuricuns who like games with high scores like 14 to 7.

On this new scoring system Portugal just put the smackdown on North Korea at 49-0 !!

The Saudi ref of the Chile-Swiss game is demonstrating why a
petty-minded martinet thinks he is exerting control by the
capricious issuing of cards for every little acting job
but he has lost all control of this match.

9 cards? The guy is insane. Talk about wrecking a game.
