I took this today on the S. side of Mt. St. Helens while visiting the lahar (mud flow), the tree molds and Ape Cave. More on that trip later.

Boo,
Barred Owl, sorry. And contrary to many tree-huggers' opinion the
Barred may be as culpable for the decline of the Spotted as clear-cutting.
Although they are both of the Strix genus the
Barred is much more aggressive in establishing territory at the
expense of the Spotted. Anyway, good spot and shot!
If it was a Great Grey it wouldn't have the spotting on the back,
the head would appear much larger proportionally, and it would have
a longer tail in addition to being much bigger. The overall look is
more greyish especially on the breast/belly such that the barring is
less pronounced.

Thanks Reilly. I used to know birds of W. North America much better than I do now, so thanks for setting me straight; it was a wild guess, really. Your sub-species is certainly one that's new to my experience. I hope to see one in the wild sometime. Do they inhabit steep rock faces and nest there sometimes? Or are they strictly arboreal?

Rumor has it the CosmicBarred has expanded its range from JTree and is now a known nester in the Red Rocks!

Doing trailwork at the Rosendale Waterworks area last weekend, one of the guys accidentally unearthed this guy. Luckily, he was uninjured, and quickly returned to the ground, where he disappeared into an enseen tunnel in less than one second!
