As we have a general election coming up, I want to pitch the concept of volunteering as a poll worker.
I did it last year, and I found it to be one of the more moving and patriotic things I've done. It was amazing to help a hundred or so people get to vote! I also have an appreciation for the complexity of the process, and at least in my county, for the honesty of the vote.
And what I didn't know when I volunteered, was they actually pay you to do this! Lengthy work, but worth the experience.
LA County uses over 25,000 poll workers, and it is the availability of these workers to assure that people have the opportunity to vote fairly and promptly.
I understand that this is a stretch for someone who works a regular job. But if you don't, or if you are retired, or you are really interested in the election process, it's a great chance to participate and ACTUALLY make a difference.

The news is an unexpected move from Mr. Bloomberg, who has not been a member of the Democratic Party since 2000; was elected the mayor of New York City as a Republican; and later became an independent.
