Good Morning!

I always liked those big paintings in the old P.O.

Glad to hear you're going to get that hernia taken care of.

Yeah, I'm glad, too. Nasty hernia has taken a toll on its once-manly physique.Frodo Does Fresno, sequel to The Hobbit, soon at your nabe.

Hope it goes well for you with the hernia surgery, Brian. Keep us posted, good luck!

To the relief of some, this will be the last in a series of fictional and/or semi-autobiographical woeful love sonnets directed at purging those last demons of my misspent youthful infatuations.

The Harlequin Pencil Necked Geek

Before the sun came
When fortune was bad
I only found heartache to seek

For I once was a lad
So beaten and flailed
I determined to never be meek

I once knew a lass
I should say she knew me
With unquenched curiosity to peak

But when she had her way
She tossed me aside
And played me a fool and a freak

That's when came a time
Again to my life
When things seemed so positively bleak

Until finally one day
I might hear the sad tale
Of the harlequin pencil necked geek

I was traveling abroad
Alone and recluse
When I went without food for a week

And that's when it occurred
To this dismal young lad
I might finally end my losing streak

Just outside of Reims
Beyond the railroad tracks
I witnessed acts of strange mystique

Where clowns goofed off
But high above
The acrobats exercised their wild technique

Their main starring act
High up on the wire
Like a pixie was agile Monique

She hopped and she twirled
With gyrations aplenty
With a figure both buxom and sleek

Her hypnotic allure
So captured my heart
That I loitered around for a week

I gave labor for free
An apprentice I'd be
I camped out by a nearby dry creek

In the hope that the troupe
Would enlist me for good
I endured their unending critique

So when they broke camp
Taking show to the road
I stayed on for a six month long streak

Of shows and strange acts
But I finally was sacked
When I brazenly opened my beak

At an afterwork soirée
When I professed my desire
To the elegant but silent Monique

For a boy half her age
But one foolish as me
My lack of civility was hardly unique

But the backstory here
Was a mystery complete
She once sang of but now could not speak

And she never gave voice
Since calamity came
To what became of her harlequin pencil necked geek

So out on my butt
The troupe traveled on
My transgression the final last tweak

To cement my goodbyes
And I wouldn't lie
Or tell of tall tales with my tongue in my cheek

And I never found out
What became of Monique
Or the fate of her harlequin pencil necked geek

At the very end of this delightful caravan,
there is the rare avian melody of the Pencil-Necked Geek,
not to be confused with the Warbler.
What a trio, adding the Duck.

The community mourned Timmy’s death, and the Montrose Search and Rescue Team spent time talking to kids at Valley View Elementary, where Timmy had been a student. And in a Hollywood-style ending, Barbara’s older sister Sue was so grateful for her sister’s rescue that she joined the MSAR team herself. She served with them for many, many years, giving back to the team that had saved her sister’s life.

Ending up here. Causing the wind to blow and rain to fall and smiles to widen.
edit: But it was sparkling light and warm sun all day today - a little breezy, but with a balmy tone.

When I Tried to Eat My Own Big Toe

The cold winter's winds
Howled as I trudged
O'er mountain passes
Into drifts of snow
That would not budge

And when the snows climbed
Way above my head
I dug in a cave
Cold, shivering until
I thought I was dead

And woke with a hunger
I was famished you know
Like ten hungry men
As I tried to eat
My own big toe

It tasted like feet
Stinky and gross
Leathery and numb
Imagining it tasted
Like bangers on toast

But when I bit down
To tear off a bite
I broke out in a sweat
And promptly passed out
With knuckles of white

And when I awoke
I felt stronger you know
I was minus one toe
Now one percent less
With nine more to go

I was hesitating to post this. Loath, in fact. Yes, I was loath to post.

But based on what I've just seen here, it's more apropos than a surfing video like Psyscheout (vintage fifties).

Interplanetary Hunger

It's so sad, I'd thought we'd come
Far from the place where a guy'd eat his thumb

But apparently the deal ain't so,
This feller's gone and et his big toe.

That's still 38 digits between us
That should get us at least to Venus

A Rhombicuboctahedron

I dreamed about a rhombicuboctahedron
A twenty six sided die shaped sphere
But erroneously I thought it a decahedron
With only twelve sides it was no where near

When I go back to sleep tonight
I'll ponder on only a cube
The circle of life is a world shaped by strife
And too much for this country rube

Nita Torres’ recalled another Yosemite hazard, hornets that nest in the ground:
“Somewhere during the first two miles, I stepped on a ground hornet’s nest and
the little bastards stung me in a couple of places. Ouch! One of the hornets flew
under my Vuarnet sunglasses and I thought I was going to get stung in the eye. I
was screaming (like a girly girl) and Reid rescued me by quickly pulling off my
glasses. The rest of the trip was fun. Loved the remote feeling. We ran into no
one. Reid took me up the easy route, gorgeous views, fire burning in the distance,
beautiful moon. Oh the sweet memories.”

Recent Jeopardy! inquiry about the number of vertices in a cube.
I got it right - "eight or so."

How many toes did you manage?
Eight or so. Then I throwed up.

Robin Ingraham, a Merced climber and photographer, has been interested in preservation of old summit registers for years. He is mentioned in the intro to the link on Starr King in that regard, and has written for the Sierra Club publication on the subject. Ingraham's Trophies was located next to the used bookstore where I worked here in town, but I never really got to know Robin in all that time.

Here is a mention of him by Claude Fiddler.

The cows are Manilowing in the meadow
They've trampled on all of the corn
The sheep are stampeding in JTree
In spite of Miss Mary's ram's horn
And the sun came up at 6:30
On time and dressed up and purty.
