It was June in 1966, I was preparing to do an ascent of Half Dome's NW face and I hiked my family into Little Yosemite to cache some hardware for the climb. I figured as long as we were all in there why not climb the cables.
So the next morning my two daughters (age 12 and 9), my son (age 8), and my wife (a non-climber) started up the cable route. I tied all my kids together with 1-inch tubular nylon and anchored them to me for the ascent and descent which went went with no hesitancy nor problem.
Last year, after climbing the Snake Dike, I was descending the cable route with the cables down. Forty-two years had passed and I found myself asking, "What were you thinking?"

So of course we can hike to Half Dome after lunch and still have pizza at Curry by 5 pm. Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa and he sells cold water and popsicles at the top. Did we mention the escalator ride that takes you back down to your tent when you are done
tent?
most of these people are staying in an RV or motel room

Don wittily reported on his family's ascent of the cables, in context of attempts and an eventual ascent of the northwest face, in "Half Dome Capers", which is in Roper's "Ordeal by Piton".

"while one pair decides real shoes or boots are not important while making the vertical trek"
...those are Chacos. I've sent .10s in my Chacos, as well as the Grand Teton and a few other august summits (with socks, yes, but with Chacos nonetheless).
Was that a reporter deciding what "real shoes" are?

Reviving an old thread. But it turns out that the NPS did a study on hikers and the Half Dome cables in 2008 "to gauge visitor exposure to information, awareness of safety issues, perceptions of crowding, perceptions of risk, and other factors that influence a safe and enjoyable visit."

The OP is incorrect regarding the last death.
As far as I know there have been multiple deaths on the cables since this last summer.
One that I remember was on June 14th as I was in the park that day.
Edit:
I see that the OP was on June 13th.
I guess it was the 13th and not the 14th...so nevermind.

Its amazing that there aren't more issues with the cable climbers. Here are some photos from late June descent after Snake Dike - one of the no-entrance-fee weekends. It was even congested trying to walk down the outside of the cables. No one was moving either direction inside the cables. It was hot and about 1 pm when we went down and there were still hoards heading up the trail, most without water, packs, etc...

I was up there last week with my daughter and we went up Via Ferreta style and wore climbing shoes, there was no way I was going to risk her life.
I asked for your imput on an earlier thread and used what you guys suggested, worked great and both myself and my daughter totally enjoyed the rails with no worries. Lucky for us there was not many peeps up there, but some of the few were definitely sketchy!!!!
There are some very slick sections, way more slick than I remember from years ago after climbing Snake dike.
edit to add:::
the obvious
here is the set-up

Finally got around to reading the entire post. Can't people read the above sign? wtf... I don't have a lot of sympathy for people who ignore the obvious, summit fever or not, seems the Darwin award was in full effect.
