yeah right, the Dems are blowing it again:

A Dem nominated Sotomayor and Dems will vote to confirm her.

Wait and see, a good number of Repups will vote her also.

She will be confirmed and serve on the Supreme Court.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED (really, this time)

What else could you realistically want out of the "Dems"?

So, it appears the award for most degrading sh*thead Senator at the Hearings most certainly goes to Lindsey Graham. After all of his comments, in today's closing, he basically said that in spite of his rantings, he would vote for her, congratulations, and good luck.

Is this guy always such as d*ckhead, or did he grab the short stick in the GOP's pre-Hearing 'who's gonna be the GOP d*ckhead' drawing?

Re: Lerner's opinion piece, I think his point is that the Republicans are using the opportunity to grandstand and "pitch" their point of view on various controversial topics to 10s of millions of listeners, but the liberals are quiet and calculating, but not on the offensive at all - neither in this case (which I can understand) nor in their approach generally. 60% of Americans want single payer health but the Dems only apologetically bring up the possibility of a watered down "public option". Being nice only gets you so far.

And here is "The 10 Dumbest Things Republicans Have Said About the Sotomayor Hearings", just for laughs

Yes, one has to be an idiot to believe that.

But why do I say that?

BECAUSE: Judge Sotomayor, AND THE OTHER WHITE JUDGES, all
agreed that existing law must be upheld.

HINT: That's what Judges are REQUIRED to do, uphold law.

They refused to be "activist" judges and overturn the
state's clearly written exiting law governing exactly how
the standards for promotion, and hiring, tests be conducted.

Only an idiot would refuse to actually read the opinion.

I think it's important to recognize that the confirmation hearings are not much more than politic theatre. As Lindsay Graham said early on, everyone knows Sotomayor is going to get confirmed. Therefore, all the tough talk by people like Sessions, et al., is really for the benefit of the supporters on the far right, so they can go back to them and say they did their job. The notion that the Dems should put on a song and dance for their constituents because the Republicans are is just childish. The goal is to communicate that you want to appoint a well qualifed, independent jurist, not a puppet of the left.

It's silly to pretend that being female and Latina doesn't affect you, just as it's silly to pretend being a white male doesn't affect you.

And that is the primary job of the principled jurist.

To rise above the self, and interpret the law according to the intent of Congress.

And their job is what... to make themselves look like out of touch *ssholes? If only one in five voters calls themself a Republican these days, exactly who are they hoping to appeal to by being a complete idiot like Graham?

apogee,

That's the sad part. They really are. The right appears to be going thru serious identity issues. When Newt Gingrich and Rush Limbaugh are your party's flag bearers, you know you have problems.

Another point, for all of those who feel that grilling Sotomayor is necessary because she's a female Latina, why wasn't such a grilling necessary for Roberts or Alito? I think there's a terrific double standard being applied that somehow, if you're not a white male, you're not qualified or trustworthy. On a personal level (being part Latino), I find it kind of insulting. On a professional level (as a lawyer), I find the right's demeanor--that every one but them are judicial activists--kind of insulting as well.

Norton - Your point?

I see that you've provided a link, and have provided excerpts of that liked page...

Do you think she's a racist for what she said? Or am I just reading your original post incorrectly

EDIT EDIT: Fat Dad has a good point. The right is always guarding against anyone who is not them from getting anywhere near the bench.

Jingy, my point was to cast great doubt on Rockermike's statement
that Democrats were "blowing it" as he said, regarding how
the Sotomayor hearings were going.

No, I think it's because she appears to be a Latino activist judge that puts Latino consideration above others. By definition that is not only racist, but bigoted as well.

I don't blame her, she is a 'latina' woman, maybe she has some resentment against 'whitey' or 'blacks'.

Sure appears that way.

Sonia Sotomayor isn't even a liberal, she's conservative

How so?

""I think it's because she appears to be a Latino activist judge that puts Latino consideration above others""

Some of the petitioners in Ricci, the firefighters who sued because their test results were thrown out, ARE HISPANIC.

Will one of you legal scholars please provide me with a single citation to one of her opinions in which you assert she improperly put Latino considerations above others?

I'd say the only one with resentment around here towards other races is you, blue.

But don't worry about it- we are all a bunch of homo-loving commies, so our opinion doesn't mean sh*t. (Feel free to copy and paste that phrase anywhere you like, in whatever manipulative context you prefer.)
