So tell me again, what is the good news for the conservatives?

The wealthy oligarchs who have essentially set your national agenda for the last 40 years are generally opposed to anything like true democracy. True democracy stands for things that they oppose, so their job has been to concoct an unholy coalition to hang onto power at whatever cost. They're not in favour of anything in particular, but they're certainly opposed to many things.

Their mantra, that lower taxes, deregulation and so-called family values are the solution to all real and imaginary problems, has finally lost credibility. It's going to take them time to accept that, work through the consequences, and create a new coalition that has any strength.

They don't have ideology - they have idiotology.

Fattrad, we both agree, amazingly, that there can, in fact often are, huge amounts of waste in government spending.
Take your party's one trillion dollar waste in the desert for example. Another example would be your conservative ex president "W" just last fall socializing the banks with a 700 billion dollar bailout. Why, that's almost two trillion pissed away by conservatives, talk about socialism!
On the other hand, big government waged WWII and beat the Germans and Japan, along with liberating Europe.
Big government also put an American on the moon, and currently provides universal, single payer, healthcare to tens of millions of Americans at a far, far, most efficent cost than private for profit health care companies.

"...handful of the ultra right wing..."

I didn't realize any stratification of the GOP existed any longer- it has seemed pretty homogenously (hope the 'homo' doesn't freak you out too much) far right for the last 8 years or so. I mean, has anyone ever heard of the phrase 'moderate republican' as a political entity?

So, fattrad, what parts of this package would you call 'socialist'? I'm not sure why I'm asking- virtually anything that provides assistance to other people seems to fall under the category of 'socialism' in the eyes of the Repugs.

The Republican Party to some is a mostly homogenous group of white sexagenarian males.

That doesn't mean that they're a bunch of homos concerned only with sex.

(There apparently was one US local election, where one candidate accused the other of being a "sexagenarian", and won because of it. It was true - the guy was over 60. But all the voters saw was S-E-X.)

Wow, it amazes me that you guys try to catagorize ALL consevative people into an intolerant, bigoted group, that only loves rich people.

And then you say that Rush, et al. try to portray liberals as a certain kind of Socialists or commies.

Rush and Ann Coulter don't speak for many, many conservatives all the time. We may agree on certain issues fundamentally, but not completely.

Kinda like saying Al Franken, Randy Rhodes, Keith Olberman and Dennis Kucinich speak for all liberals.

Look in the mirror.

EDIT: "The Republican Party to some is a mostly homogenous group of white sexagenarian males. "

I'll assume that's a troll because that's idiotic and I know you're more intelligent than that.

Bluering, you're right, all of these characterizations and stereotyping of each other are ridiculous, and most of it is nowhere close to reality. Honestly, I wish the dialogues that occur here could be a lot more rational, less hyperbolic, and discuss the merits of issues, rather than constantly descending into namecalling and flaming.

We are ALL guilty of it here in ST, some far moreso than others. I, for one, would strongly support a movement towards reasonable, rational discussion- but that seems to be a pipe dream on ST.

No, I think a about 10-15% of the republican party who have are entirely dedicated to self and corporate interests pander relentlessly to the remaining 85% based on either outright lies, fear-mongering, or racism for the uneducated, distracting social non-issues for the religious, and completely unrealistic "low taxes", "small government", and "democracy" mantras for suburbanites.

As a 'party' republicans couldn't give a rip about what this country needs to be competitive in the future - a stable, healthy, educated citizenry. They're into skimming the cream that [naturally and competitively] rises to the top and the hell with the rest. That colloquial worldview was fine up until about 1980, but it's a different world now and playing that game out in a global economy just means we will continue to decline into a society dramatically split between a few haves and a vast ocean of have nots.

Want to be competitive? Then social infrastructure concerns - education, healthcare, and retirement - need to be stable, strong and can't rest on the backs of U.S. corporations. But that can't end up meaning workers just fend for themselves (which is what republicans [as corporate proxies] are currently fighting tooth and nail for).

After being f*#ked over for (edit) six years by a lack of invasion planning, inadequate force levels, no occupation planning, an absence of diplomacy, token partners, pervasive carpetbagging, inappropriate material, extended deployments, and stop losses - well, hell - I'd be a skeptic, too...

Patrick, it was lovely Milano (Milan). My dad was an exec for Bank of America helping to set-up/operate "Banca d'America d'Italia".

We also had a vacation cabin near Monte Cervino (Matterhorn) in the awesome town of Valtournanche.

EDIT: Noshoes, the other Air America Randy Rhodes. Ozzy's Randy was a badass, though, I agree!

Dr. F, again you're really over-simplifying things. Do I vote R usually? Yes. Why? Because I usually have to choose between two people. I usually dislike the D candidate more than I dislike the R candidate.

Sadly, that's what voting has come to these days.

Does that mean I fully support my choice? No. It was the best choice I personally had at the time.

Bluering, I am curious. You say you "usually" vote Republican.
So, when and for what Democrats have you voted for in the past?
Or do you vote Libertarian or some other party, when do you ever vote Democratic party?
