Damn - all I have to show for are the "you are about to be banned" screenshots I took.
Anyway, there's always rocklimbing.com; they have lots and lots of avatars and emoticons...

Of course, I didn't save my favorite... Maybe Russ will be so kind as to post it here. I just copied and pasted his tinyurl link to the oiled boobs...

Yeah - I saw all of those...
I think the fact that there was no pixel or file size limit was definitely knott a good thing.
The "party" GIF alone is 1.6 MB. When this thread was going strong, the pages weren't
loading correctly (on my 2 Ghz Core 2 Duo laptop with 3 GB of RAM), so I suspect it
was screwing something up on the server-side. As you know, sites that allow avatars
have strict pixel-size and file-size restrictions, and I suppose there's a reason for that...

Yeah, I agree with Del Cross. Things were loading fine until my java error. :)
Did anyone happen to save a copy of Russ' avatar? It was by far the best.

I think it was more to do with, as del cross said, the hack could have been exploited in bad ways. I was somewhat proof of that.

I pretty much agree with everything in your last post, Rox. Honestly, I was surprised they were capable of fixing the hole so quickly.

Would you prefer a micro-managed, moderated forum?
A whole lot of people seem to like it the way it is.

NAw, I got nowhere else to be. Just like YOU.
ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111
Funny - I actually spend way more time on SF Gate and MacRumors, but I still manage
to swoop in here several times a day to have a look. For example, when I found this
thread, it was already up to something like 85 posts...
Pretty sites are way overrated - ask anyone who hung out on rec.climbing when Usenet was the shít.

It would be cool to be able to embed video clips right into posts, instead of just links. Mainly for the TR possibilities... but only if everyone doesn't just go all crazy with teh stoopid vids they foundz online.

Rokjox, there's a lot of crazy possibilities. Depending on the browser and OS, a lot of people are running Windoze home edition and insecure Internet Explorer. Seeing del coss's javascript alert, the "You all are about to be banned" popup, though pretty hilarious, was not a good sign :) trojaning the ST'ers computer, stealing their email access, gmail or yahoo cookie (http://tinyurl.com/6fke5q); are the first "worst things" i can think of. there are already enough bots online - machines that have been taken over and the user has no idea.
am not sayin' that anyone on ST might stoop to such levels. just that the site admin had to close that hole. otherwise we could've seen some REAL stalking :-)
Edit - we certainly could have avatars. thru proper implementation rather than by accident.

Rokjox,
What if instead of a harmless pop-up window it launched a new pop-up with code that downloads adware, spyware, or viruses when the user clicks the "OK" button or the little x in the upper right corner?
It needed to be closed.
And Russ... I said you could borrow it if you promised to keep yer fingers out of it!
