been up the road a few times this winter, not that much avi debris when I was last up but that was 3 weeks or so ago so maybe a bit from the last storm or two. Still not a huge amount of snow and a high snow level kinda season this year. I bet it will be like last year so I'm guessing the 28th of May

I forgot, Mike Tollefson is no longer super of the park, so who knows what the new persons agenda is? Mike is a great guy and was very supportive of little Lee Vining.
It was he who was responsible for rather early road openings the past 2 years.
how do I judge that? By the fact TPR still had too much snow around to get the summer water system up and running. Usually, the resort would be open when the road was.
After forcing ourselves open 2 years ago for Memorial weekend, and having it fizzle big time, we are no longer pushing to be open by then. The first weekend in June seems to be the magic time.
I'll still bet a 6 pack for May 22. These spring storms are being disappointing so far.

Does anyone know when the road is cleared enough so you can ride your bike from the gate to Tenaya Lake and back...???

This year, I'd say late June. Mammoth will still be open though!

My vote goes for Memorial Day Weekend!!! That would give us all a nice 3 day weekend of climbing in the meadows!!! There is more snow than last year that's for sure. My glass is always half full if ya know what I mean

Karen, they usually open the road to bikes the week before opening.
While they are actively doing snow removal, it is closed to bikes and foot traffic.

it has a lot to do with the safety of the plowing crews in avalanche zones along the road, e.g. Olmstead Point where a plow was swept off the road by an avalanche one year killing the driver...
so how fast will the melt out be this year?

Sure hope it's before the memorial for Frank Sacherer, on May 22nd in the Valley. It would make the trip much simpler for eastsiders.

I think it's way too early to make a legitimate guess, so I'll make an illegitimate guess, July 1st

Yep, waaaaaay too early, but my intuition tells me it's gonna be a wet spring. I think we'll be lucky if it's open anytime before June.

Looking at LADWP graphs at this point we are close to normal and a little above last year for the east side. That would indicate Memorial Day weekend or a week later unless things are a lot different on the west side.

interesting
I looked at a snow pack measurement for Emigrant Wilderness area and it was double the average. (didn't see last year's and it's just one plotted point)
cheers,

Were up over 400 inches after that last storm.
But given the rapid rate of melt the past few years and the fact that Cal Trans had cleared to Ellery before this storm, it may open mid June yet.
FYI to all; Cal Trans will be re paving from Blue Slide to Ellery in July and August this summer, and Edison has to tear up the road from Ellery to TUOLUMNE to replace a bad power line. The only one. This means, no power at TPR or Tuolumne until it's fixed.
The winter rangers have been without power since Jan. 8.
The Inyo has to do an EIS(or something similar) before Edison can do the work, and they HAVE NOT STARTED YET! It is April 8 and the summer season generally gets rolling well by June 15. That's just over 3 months.
I'm starting to get a little nervous.
Oh, I ought to add that I have gotten to know the forest service LEO, and she informed me that they now have 24 hour patrols and will be strictly enforcing the no overnight parking outside a campground rule in Lee Vining Canyon. Basically anything west of 395 along 120. Big bummer, we'll see how that pans out.
I discussed the ramifications of this with her and she is a by the book LEO. She also has a great sense of humor. If you get my drift.
She has a really sweet Belgian Malinois police dog now. He's cool, but he is protection trained.
The Inyo would like climbers to disperse camp on the east side of 395 by the craters, or pay to camp in the campgrounds.
