Well ain't this a pisser.
At least I got the opportunity to read the voices of people I had admired from afar in my early days of rock-climber-wannabeism, Johnny Bachstar in particular.
The ending of this forum makes me reminiscence on events that stand out to me -
Making Facelift sushi with Nature, Brutus of Wyde and Nurse Em in Yellow Pines for a few years. Teaching Ken Yager's boy how to make a stone crab handroll so he would quit poaching the ones we already rolled. Gave Lynnie a ride and got tooled by the LEOs trying to help Barbarian get rid of a few hundred pounds of beer bottles.
Survived the drama years of LEB and Rajmit. Gagged my way through the Clash of Civilizations with Fattrad and Crowley. Tried the Flames but too much cowbell for me. Laughed my butt off at the works of Ouch - may he live somewhere in the webiverse. Actually read DMTs stuff - Bear Sh#t Island - genius!
Learned that life is a combination of "Yer Gunna Die" and "Sutpid".
Crankloons, dipshits and butt plugs - messy stuff, just like life.
I will also remember being exposed to a higher sense of being through the contributions from Largo, JGill, Stannard and Ed Hartouni. Thanks guys.
Grateful for the chance to read the real-time thoughts of climbing greats who have passed and those still with us.
I was never much of an contributor, really never felt I had much to add, but was always enraptured by the stories, trip reports and remembrances of the collective.
Thank you all for these memories.

Oh Supertopo. It has been fun. Growing up, as a climber, without much of a “mentor” you have been a bit of an influence on me, in hindsight. I have been posting and browsing herefor over 10 yesrs and even though I had kinda dissapeared, now that it is going away I must say goodbye... during dark periods of my life when I really didnt have much else this place felt like a weird home... as I have said goodbye very recently to many things I care about ... I must here also just issue a tearful but optimistic farewell. It has been fun, thank you.

I "met" and talked with most of my climbing heroes through this wonderful forum. (Thank you Joseph for opening the door to me).

Kicked the habit some years ago but Supertopo was a huge part of my life for many many years
Forums in general were that way for me, starting with Usenet for the science side initially, then for hobby/passion stuff like backcountry skiing and climbing. I was already kicking the habit by the time SuperTopo got started, so I read here far more than I participated.
Some of the regulars here will have serious withdrawal, I expect. Don't get depressed just because you lose your fix. Go climbing or something fun and let the internet and the lawyers sit in the cesspool.

I came here mostly to connect with old friends (Philo, and Nick Danger) I was also blown away that I could interact with and get a more personal glimpse of people I had previously only read about in the mags and journals.

wow, this is really depressing. can hardly believe supertopo will be gone. i have recruited el cap partners off this site, been enriched with the history presented here, gotten in trouble with my wife for wasting so much time on the taco, and i made my greatest apology everon this site.
it really suck that a few bad apples made what was a melting pot and meeting place for thousands of climbers into extinction.

Lorenzo, I've always posted the threads to the Mudn'Crud forum. It's a climbers' discussion forum centered on climbing at Pinnacles National Park (in central California). The site has an "Everywhere Else" section where all my PCT trip reports appear.

It's funny, the whole reason I got "caught" in the "photo deletion" issue here on this site was the fact that I first post the threads to Mudn'Crud. That site still uses the "image" brackets and, with no warning that they'd become a problem on this site, I just copy/pasted the reports to here after I was done there.
Anyway, thanks a ton for your interest. We'll be back on the trail starting in mud-June, crossing into Washington after two hiking days (I can't wait...).

After reading the entire thread on Tobin Sorensen, I thought about how just one thread like that can be better than an entire biography of the person, because through the lens of friends and family, you get a feel for an amazing life and a wonderfully inspired person, and what he contributed to climbing. These are the things that I found unique about this Forum. Some the threads are just really good.
Also, special thanks to Jim Herson for sharing his amazing journey of raising a climbing family. .........not to mention occasional posts from Golden Age icons such as Wayne Merry and John Gill.............
So thank you so much for hosting this site as long as you did. It is indeed unique on the worldwide web.

Darn, so it looks like the chatter around town was true. Sorry to see this happen, SuperTopo was always a great resource and a fun stop away from all the other things. I hope threads like the Woodfords thread and any relating to Lovers Leap or the High Sierra, the Hulk and such, are somehow archived, supported, and remain extant. They do serve as a record of sorts.
Thanks Super Topo. And thank you Chris for providing this great resource over so many years. Good luck with everything.
