I do not think anyone has ever been found with the IR detectors.
I hear about then a lot. Have they ever worked?
To bad they did not have a 2m ham radio. Here in S. Cal it so easy to hit a repeater.

John, interesting to hear some of the technical details behind these systems. I assumed anyone in a cave would have to exit to be seen by one. It's likely the systems they're flying are FLIRs, but there are others.

Joe:
Yes, there are quite a few manufacturers now. Fire departments are using them to see through smoke and there are many other applications. I think humans have a deep seated desire to both fly and see in the dark. I got to work on the latter during the week. During the weekends I did my best to avoid the former.
Cheers,

Wow, the coverage at the moment is phenomenal. CNN, MSNBC, and even the GOP mouthpeice Faux News. This is good coverage. I sure hope those guys kept as warm as possible in their snow cave, and stayed hydrated. Found snow cave, coil of rope, and sounds like an ice axe has been spotted, and a "Y" carved into the snow/ice. They should pull them out soon, maybe within the next hour or two?
Good vibes to the North Face of Mt. Hood everyone!!!!

they found two ice tools, a sleeping bag and some rope and slings.
It's likely that the two men who went for help took one sleeping bag between the two of them. that would leave one extra for the man left behind.
They also likely each had two ice axes for the steep NF gully climb. The two who set out probably left their extras behind because they were done with the steepest climbing.
My guess is the guy left alone set out by himself with his gear and left the extra stuff.
but where are they?

Good question. Unless they're incapacitated in a cave lower down, why wouldn't they be out waving to the many people looking for them? It was supposedly 34F on the mountain not taking wind chill into account and it was a nice clear day. At least they have another good day tomorrow to keep looking.

Strange that FOX is reporting the fatality but not CNN.
What a bummer. There's still hope for the other two.

Shot of Hood from a about a half hour ago on the way back from Beacon. It was dead calm in the Gorge and the sun was out - optimal conditions for operating on the mountain. Bummer on the news so far. That they didn't come out of their caves yesterday just wasn't a good sign. Many condolences, will keep up hope for the remaining two.
