Bunch of bar flies, the bar tender just threw out the worst of you. This is what happens to a man who clearly spent 100% of his waking hours on Supertopo.
Good on Chris, he clearly stated a few years ago that 1 person dominating every thread with a bunch of sh#t isn't something he is interested in hosting.

Er, correct me if I’m wrong, but if an offending person goes too far after a while and gets the boot, can’t they return with another avatar and email address? Then might they not be not quite so offensive? Can’t the boot send a signal and force a sort-of time out?

Anybody know?

There Is a LOT of Bat-shit crazy OPINERS on this site BESIDES, Ron. That's what made this site so awesome. If you don't like a thread, don't open it.
Exactly the problem. Those crowing about Ron's disappearance often posted meaner content than Ron, and I still think the insults directed at Ron far outnumbered the insults he hurled. The Insulter/Insultee ratio was even lower for LEB.
Banning is beginning to look like the Supreme Court found U.S. capital punishment to be in 1976 - like being struck by lightning.
I have to disagree with Cosmic about the party line, though. Dr. F and Joe Hedge, among others, also go the boot, (in my opinion, to the Forum's impoverishment) and the intersection of their views and those of Ron is pretty much the null set.

I'm boycotting ST until an explanation is given.
Who wants to labor on expressing themselves if, down the road, some capricious person can redact all your efforts?
Are there any other Rons who opt out?

Banning is one thing, taking ALL their content, including the climbing content, is another. If he requested it, fine. If it was done unilaterally, not fine.
edit: question answered by RJ. Seems Ron requested his content pulled if he should get banned. Thanks.

Ron was one of the most prolific ST posters ever -- probably over 30,000 posts. Sorting through all those posts to find the 2% that were climbing-related would take someone a month. Simply not going to happen on a site like this.

However if one does a google search for various climbing areas ..say woodfords or donner history..rons posts would have come up and been quite relevant..
Unless requested, this deleting of information not found anywhere else should stop. It's not just Ron.. we have lost a ton of unique no where else to be found climbing history due to this terrible policy.

are you folks so deluded you think that principles like censorship and free speech apply to stupor topo? this ain't no free press boyz..and by the way all that precious historical, archival fruit of your labor is owned lock stock and barrel by chris. your 'efforts' are to be archived or vaporized at his whim...which is exactly what y'all signed up for...

Mods started a thread saying they do not want ST to be a forum for whatever comes to mind.
Hillary is clearly behind this.

Tad..
Nature AND.. Timid had it right.. Chris asked for people to slow down creating contentious threads. Ron laughed at that and then started 3 threads on the same basic subject.
I bet Chris asked some of his friends what they thought of his changes, and they said that Ron was still doing his same ol same ol.. so when Chris took a look and saw that it was true, Ron got the boot.
you kind of have to get into Chris' thinking. If he posts black and white rules, then some people go right up to them and flirt with them just to flaunt it and show that they can. Look at philo.. Mr. who me?.. I never did nothing wrong. never banned, never yadda yadda yadda.. never whatever. But we all know he has been a pain in the ass. Chris puts up with that to a point, but once you reach a certain noise level, then adios.
Ron did this to himself. He knows it. We all do if we just pay attention and stop needing exact lines. We know what being respectful is. Its not black and white. It doesn't mean you can never do or say something contentious. But it does mean you can't go on and on.
As for Werner.. he is pushing ya'lls buttons. There have been times when there has been good conservations on contentious subjects with intelligent decent people, but some people have just taken over those conversations and so they aren't possible anymore, so Werner just pushes buttons to wind people up so maybe they will go away. Its not really working, but ….. It does reveal that people just don't get it.
Edit: vvvvvv what RJ said..

Ron had a long history of posting on SuperTopo, including many posts of high quality on climbing topics. But, he was also a person that generated a lot of complaints about inappropriate content, as he occasionally stepped over the line.
Ron received a number of warnings about inappropriate content, and had many posts deleted in a precision strike manner along the way.
As complaints continued over time, he was warned that continued inappropriate posts would result in his account being deactivated.
Recently, after a long build up, and continued complaints from other members, we reached the point where Chris decided it was time to deactivate his account. This was regrettably done, given Ron's many positive contributions.
Ron had requested that if he was banned, that all of his posts and photos be removed from the site. We complied with that request. His many quality climbing related posts are a significant loss to our community and this discussion forum. But, we felt his request was reasonable, and we respected his wishes.
Ron had many interesting things to say in his many posts on this site, and he expressed thoughtful and engaging opinions on many topics. A small percentage of his posts were outstanding climbing related contributions. While some of his posts might have been considered trolling, his posts were most often respectful and thoughtful. His OT threads were also quite popular, and it is clear that many people found them interesting and participated in those discussions. If we were focused on traffic, we'd encourage such OT posts. Unfortunately, many of those topics are in areas that we simply feel are better discussed on other sites, and we'd prefer not to host them on the SuperTopo climbing forum. These types of heated OT discussions also tend to give rise to heated emotions, and personal attacks (rarely from Ron, but often directed at him or others participating in the OT threads).
There are a great many places on the internet where the kinds of discussions Ron most commonly posted on, or started threads on, are appreciated. SuperTopo is simply not the right venue. We hope Ron will find an alternative site to express his many and thoughtful opinions. We'd be happy to have him back too, if he limited posts much more frequently to the kinds of things the climbing forum is intended for and avoid inappropriate posts.
We wish Ron the best and hope he finds another site that has a focus more in line with the kinds of posts he most often made here.

Thanks, RJ. Its seems from your post, though, that getting the axe depends on ST getting complaints from other users. I wouldn't be surprised if, in Ron's case, some of the complainors either posted, or ignored posts by others throwing insults at Ron. If so, I offer a modest proposal:
When a user complains about another user, we should analyze the previous 100 posts of the complainor and the complainee. If the insult/benign ratio of the complainor exceeds that of the complainee, the complainor gets the axe!
That might be a better enforcement mechanism for civility.
