Hear you Ron
AS you may know
You can do some handy rigging (landlord permitting) for around $500
Curious, did you call the cops before you left the 'safe room', given you clearly heard noises, and had received significant training(?) which allowed you to identify the likelihood of the sound being a gunshot; and had established that there is someone with a motive to come by
And, so why leave the 'safe room then? Was it that the cops were taking too long? Or you felt the threat was immediate and you needed to initiate the contact. Did you change the lighting to dis-orientate the possible intruder and call out a warning?
Perplexed mate. Those trained well, have had the 'deformation professionnelle' beat out of them
They also know to trust the man on the ground, at the time
I trust no offence is taken

Sounds like you are in a tough bind there mate
I'm in no-position to advise on a situation I wasn't at
In a place I've never been
My apologies
And sympathies for the stress that surrounds your circumstances
And likely the circumstances that put the 'ganger' where he 'is'
EDIT: My apology stands. But not sure I'd condone this type of response as a measured approach to noise in the house. As for the guy being someone the "gene pool" wouldn't miss....those are just easy-typed words that suggest ignorance; be nice if you are working-on being a little kinder in real life. There may well have been smarter options that would mitigate someone (or several people) being harmed or worse (but again I wasn't there) and don't know what Ron quantifies as still having "it". Though to quote Twain loosely out of context "If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail"

You guys don't get it
You need to hear the story of the sheep, the wolfs, and the sheep guard dog...
YOU are the sheep, quietly going about your mundane lives, milling around in a circle....
But BEWARE, the WOLVES are out there, circling the sheep and waiting to pounce
But do not fear, for I am here,...
I am the Sheep Guard Dog
I PROTECT you, the meek, the unarmed, the untrained, from the bad guys....
Because, as if you haven't figured it out yet, ITS ALL ABOUT ME, ITS ALWAYS ALL ABOUT ME
...how I live, how I react, how I cleverly sense danger, you must be grateful for me.....ME ME ME

I roll out of bed grabbing a keltech 9mm as i fully expect a badguy around the wall from me. Heart pounding like a bongo drum, i spin into position for the take down. Its that sickening decision that you must face the shooter to get a shot. I whirred left, right, and all around and couldnt find the target!
There is no reason to behave like this. "the take down"? really?
What Segal movie is that line from?
This type of drama is for the terminally bored, not a responsible gun owner.
If you live in a place that is a constant threat either move or install security devices as suggested up thread.
The Zimmerman mentality in your description is the main reason many innocent lives are lost to accidental shootings every year.
Your response to the noise you mistook for gunshots could have been calm and calculated rather than panicked and confused.
If you continue to own firearms Ron, I would suggest taking a tactical course and educating yourself on the responsible and proper use of your weapons.

Another American gun suddenly awakening:
"An Ooltewah man who shot and killed what he thought was a middle-of-the-night prowler -- actually a 72-year-old man with advanced Alzheimer's disease -- Wednesday in Walker County, Ga., hasn't been charged but he might be later, authorities said.
The slain man, Ronald Westbrook, had walked about 3 miles to the shooting scene from his home on Carlock Circle, Sheriff Steve Wilson said at a Wednesday afternoon news conference. When Westbrook was shot, he was clutching letters he had taken from a mailbox on Marbletop Road, where he had lived previously, the sheriff said.
A deputy had stopped and questioned Westbrook at about 2:30 a.m. at the mailbox, Wilson said, but Westbrook said he was getting his mail and lived up the hill.
Westbrook then rang the doorbell and turned the doorknob of a home at 188 Cottage Crest Court at 3:54 a.m., awakening Joe Hendrix, 34, of Ooltewah, and his fiancee. They had rented the home in the new subdivision about two weeks ago, next-door neighbor Brandi Wallace said.
Wilson said Westbrook was lost, confused and possibly exhausted. He had wandered for about four hours in the night with his two dogs, wearing a light jacket and straw hat as the wind-chill temperature hovered around 20 degrees.
"This one house at the end of the cul-de-sac had a porch light on," Wilson said. "I tend to think [Westbrook] was drawn to that light."
Hendrix's fiancee, whose name Wilson declined to give, called 911 and stayed on the phone with an emergency dispatcher who sent two sheriff's office patrol cars en route.
After a nine- to 10-minute wait -- and before deputies arrived -- Hendrix went outside armed with a .40-caliber handgun and saw the elderly man in silhouette behind the house, the sheriff said.
"There was no light except for the front porch light," Wilson said, explaining there are no street lights at The Woodlands, the subdivision off North Marble Top Road west of Chickamauga.
"[Hendrix] gave several what he described as verbal commands," Wilson said. "[Westbrook] continued walking toward him after he told him to stop."
Westbrook was slow to talk, Wilson said, because of his advanced Alzheimer's disease.
Fearing for his safety, Hendrix fired four shots, the sheriff said. One bullet hit Westbrook in the chest, killing him."

Anyone can buy black powder ;)
CC cameras are cheap. They would have been sufficient enough in this case to keep a shaky finger off the trigger.
The problem here is that the home owner was in a fearful and unbalanced state.
If he needs to defend his home and loved ones with firearms, the responsible way to do it is to get the training needed to keep your mind calm and clear in such instances.
You don't want the fact that you are wired too tight to be your undoing.

Put a pool in the back yard, and your chances of drowning in your back yard go up like 100%.

Marlow,
I would say that the deputy dropped the ball.
A senile old man wandering at 2:30am under-dressed for the weather and he didn't escort him home?
Hendrix was a victim too.
But I think I would have fired a warning shot when he refused to stop advancing. Remember, he had dogs. You ever been dogbit?
The old guy's alzheimers was probably compounded by hypothermia.

Thank you for sharing Marlow
Firing off a warning shot with a gun (or roll of cookie dough) may be a little premature at this point Toker
In gun tott'n communities, it may just bring more sleepy-headed trigger-happy folk out into the street
I would go back into the house
Close the door
Worst case scenario, I grab my lady (gently) and proceed out an alternative exit, finding a quiet spot to await the police

With respect Ron, training which is worth a dime has evolved
The pros don't react by immediately 'placing themselves' in these situations when they are sleepy-headed
They understand the limitations and effectiveness of 'tactics' advertised in ammo and fish'n magazines
They exhaust the alternatives first
Too many blokes wandering round
They know how to fire a gun
Read sign (apparently)
Alas, minimal knowledge on how their well-intending mind gets muddled-up in squeeky situations

To a quality standard
You would have failed Ron
For showing-up for your 'watch' sleepy-headed
You'd have received the ire of your team
For not making an informed assessment before entering the fray
You would have been departmentally charged
And a note on self-assessment mate
The pros know that one ought not self-audit
And don't go sprucing their self-performance
That's something that dilettantes prone to hypothetical bias do

Ron: Your ^^photo^^ above pretty much sums up your thousand words on self-defense. Nice work
Burning building Ron?
Evacuate
If skilled and adequately resourced
Ask yourself 'Do I have to risk myself or someone else here?'
If the compelling answer is yes, attack the fire
As good rescue teams train their guys "Dead heroes can't save lives. And injured heroes are a nuisance. Life over limb. Life over property"
And I do appreciate the humor of your self-defense story. There's many laughing at your running around the house loaded and cocked, chasing a farting dough-boy.
Truth beknownst. You likely could have just stayed in your room and hidden under the bed and called the cops. Everyone would have been safer. And that story would have been an even funnier one for you to tell us.
As a side note Ron. Good men don't talk about the "sordid detail" of long-ago experiences on the web as some compelling effort towards justifying current practices; for they know that it would be seen as lame. Vets would appreciate you for not feeling the need to do so.
