Biggest question is why you were eating at Santanas in the first place? Gross!

why you were eating at Santanas

because they are victims! The victim types can not resist a late night carne asada burrito and a giant horchata

I have been on the receiving end of being saved. At the car accident, the folks were incredible handling the Bachar crash, getting us help, etc. Once when a friend committed suicide, also really supportive. Once when this insane guy went crazy in the apartment above me, shooting holes in his wall. The other time was another insane guy in the shop who also ended up shooting himself. Plus when my Dad passed out, the first at the scene was an officer who gave him oxygen and first aid until the paramedics and firefighters arrived. Oh yeah, when a creepy guy was following me to my car, an officer was behind him, grabbed him when he got too close.

Yeah, I have valid reasons to thank them. Wish you could respect that.

It was my first time eating there. And I said in an earlier post I had to poop 3 times the next morning (like the ones where your stomach hurts and feels like you're gonna puke until you get it out) and I also had spicy butthole all day.

very few of us have ever had our ass saved by the police

You're not looking at the big picture, which is that if we did not have police we would not enjoy the relative security in which we live. Everyone benefits whether they personally have had their ass saved or not.

Sure, we've all had some negative experiences with LEO's. Mostly though, mine have been positive and I am glad they are out there. Some people seem to always have bad experiences with the cops. It must have something to do with chemistry or attitude. You only have one chance to make a first impression.

You would rather others censor their own views because they differ with yours?

I don't think people would have objected if Riley had said "I think" or "Some cops" or even "Most of the cops I've ever dealt with," but he made a blanket statement, and one that was frankly untrue and insulting to several people here.

According to ABC News, the average police officer nationwide has an IQ that is about 104. An average IQ is somewhere around 100, depending on the test that is being used.

No I am not exaggerating about what she deals with. She calls me afterwards to get it out of her system. It's nuts. Sadly some places have more bad stuff than others. Oxnard falls into "more."

As for judging people on an individual basis. I totally agree. I also think that if you meet up with a cop and have a bad attitude, it reflects right back at you. Especially if you are being defensive, it makes them think you are guilty of something BIG.

Yes, there are bad cops out there. I get an earful about them from my Sheriff friend too. Luckily they also don't last long, it catches up to them.

I also bet if you are honest, work with them, etc. most situations won't turn sour. Riley, I respect your feelings about this, but your job is to cure. Theirs is to arrest, detain, catch a thief. It's not the same gig even though you share clients. Your relationships are different.

Worst thing my friend ever dealt with, walking in on a man kicking his dead child. It scars and changes you...

Bachar used to Love Santanas. I'm not sure what he thought of it, but probably any mexican food was better than the alternative for him

Simplistic views: f*#k/thank the police. The police are all those things. I have had the police wrongly point a gun at my head and then bitch me out for it instead of owning up to their mistake. I've also had the police come to my rescue.

Anybody with authority SHOULD be under suspicion, and that's the correct view. But to demonize people just because they have authority is just as stupid as acting like they can do no wrong and are inscrutable super heroes.

Yup, and most people come in heroic/evil mixtures, it just that when your job has the potential to seriously hurt people's lives, the effect is amplified.

I don't know what to think of Law Enforcement priorities. I hear so many stories that they won't come do anything about thefts and burglaries but somehow we have more people in prison per capita, than any country in the world, including islamic countries with Sharia law and China where bagging on the government gets you prison. Why? The failed drug war is primarily responsible. Somehow they have the resources to catch the low hanging fruit.

On the other hand, Meth, that's one drug that needs to be illegal. Everything is not created equal

Peace

Jebus...that sounded profound.

I just can't help thinking of the fun day out climbing I had with Riley and a guy, a cop, who used to be a regular on this site. A day in JT during the SushiFest a few years ago, with the two of them setting up TR's on some routes for the rest of us.

I can't for the life of me imagine Riley would say that crap to this guy's face.

Some people here on both sides should watch the movie Crash, grow up a little, and lay off the rhetoric pipe.

I know you Riley. I also like you. I was just pointing out the other side that most don't see, are not aware of. It's an ugly job so when they do a traffic stop... They have all that stuff in their head. It's wise to understand that and know why some of them are on edge. If you keep that in mind, I bet most folks can deal with them better. I really believe understanding the police can go a long way for figuring out good ways to deal with them. It is a win, win situation. Yes, it's not black and white. Nothing in life is... Not all cops are good, that is for sure... Yet... Even with bad cops, bad attitude only makes things worse. Plus, a bad attitude will make a good cop go sour on you. It's a really bad and pointless thing to do either way. You for sure won't win.

Peace.

P.S. Yes. Bachar LOVED Santanas. I swear that man thought he was on the steps of heaven while eating there. :)

Meh, I have some sympathy for genuinely crazy guys who wind up on the wrong end of a power-mad cop's nightstick or whatever.
But cops dispensing a little street justice to gangsters (real or wannabees) and/or their film crew are probably making the world a better place.

Cops are a reflection of society, the good, the bad and the ugly.

Same could be said of climbers. Right now in San Diego there is a Navy Seal going to trial for ripping his Seal buddies off to the tune of one million dollars.

Beware, a long post…

Firstly, TFish, glad you got your gear back, even at a price of some sort. Did you do the right thing? The wrong thing? Should you have told the cops?

In 1987, working the bar in a restaurant in London’s Regent Street, I got off late, as people in the biz do. I walked up Oxford Street to the bus stop for the East End (18 months in Plaistow).

These two blokes (Scottish by their accents, not that it matters) walked up and asked me for a fiver, I said I did not have one. Next thing you know I am falling to the ground and my head was used as a football with a HUGE kick, the other guy said forget it let’s go. I was seeing tweety birds spinning around.

Two couples nearby, but… if it was just two guys, maybe they would have helped me, but when you have your partner with you, you have to weigh the consequences. I don’t blame them for standing by.

When I gained my wits, I went to Tottenham Court Road police station and reported it. Nothing came of it, but with the workload of a city like London, perhaps some bobbies/cops are overwhelmed.

Next day in the restaurant, a couple of my colleagues said they would (in my place) have fought the two guys off. But as another colleague pointed out, two against one, Patrick is dazed and these guys may have blades in their pockets?

What should I have done? Easy for some to say until they are confronted with a situation.

What do I do?

I would never want to be an LEO, but there are a lot of good ones, and I am glad that somebody has to do it and not me.

And I have several bad cop stories to tell.

Yo Valley ranger pulling a gun on me? (I may have deserved it, I was acting funny, D. Y. and I dropped acid at the base of the Cap earlier in the day). Coming out of the Curry employees showers, a security guard reported me (I wasn’t Curry Co).

This ranger pulls up, and escorts/walks me back to my car in the employee parking lot. He asks for ID, I reach in the glove box and next thing... a gun pointed at me. Never before and never again, hopefully. Can’t blame Mr Ranger – me acting weird, putting my hand in a glove box dark at night, still I was scared to sh#t.

Here is the kicker.

I drive back to C4 parking lot. Around the campfire at night are a bunch of us from the Columbia/ Sonora area. We hear cries of help from the Falls Trail. I am elected to call the rangers and David Y and this other guy go up the Falls Trail.

I go to the phone booth at the gas station at C4 parking lot. Finally get through (there never is a cop around when you want one, but some have large beats, however, not in the Valley).

About 15 minutes later who shows up? Yep, you guessed it. Mr Ranger thinks I am making false reports. He lectures me and off he goes.

David Y and other came down from the trail with newlyweds from the Midwest. The guy had fallen about ten feet off the trail onto a ledge.

They treat DY and the other bloke to a meal at the Foul Squeezings. Me? Nada, and a LEO who doesn’t like me (but that was 1976).

There’s more… (bear with me, it’s a long-winded post… to paraphrase a distant relative “If I had more time, I would have written a shorter post”).

CHP Officer Puff (real name), hung around the Lafayette/Walnut Creek and surrounds (Highways 24 and 80). Twice citations for me. The second time (running red light, it was green) the bailiff says that Puff (real name, I kid you not), usually has four times more cases/challenges than any other cop in the WC courthouse, so to speak. EDIT However, I was in the right (I had diagrams, photos, etc to prove my point, but still lost my case. I figure I was the third of four of Puff's "challengers", the first two were acquitted, so the judge probably thought he should give one to Puff.)

My old psychedelic-painted (that Bridwell loved apparently) 1948 Ford Pickup with (home-built camper shell), how many times between Lafayette and Valley/TM was I stopped (I think more out of the LEO’s curiosity). Livermore, Tracy, Manteca, Escalon, Oakdale… and so forth and so on. Harassment? Probably, but two sides to every coin… and then the grey areas.

1980 – Late Friday, leaving as a chef at The Refectory in WC. Come up to an accident scene (not mine, single car, no injuries among three guys), deputy halts me, he thinks I was going to fast in the fog.

I pull over, he runs a wants and warrants. Next thing you know, I am in county jail. Mom bails me out. Monday after the judge hears my side, he says, “no charges and your bail money back”.

My side? About a year earlier, in my Datsun PU, a CHP pulls me over, white on red tail light. It broke the day before and I just was coming home with a new tail light assembly. I showed him it and the receipt. Nope. Fix-it ticket.

Easily fixed and to Martinez CHP station. A lieutenant signed the fix-it ticket off. I sent it, by post to the WC courthouse. Apparently it never got there. So a warrant was issued for my arrest, and hence the previous scenario.

Moral of the story: If you have to deliver legal documents. If possible, do it by post. How many times have I heard, as a journalist, “the vagaries of the post”.

Cops… most good, some bad. Like life.

Cops are a reflection of society, the good, the bad and the ugly.

Moreso the bad.. They live eat crawl and die in the crappiest that life has to offer. They are trained to be authoritative. They attain a severely warped view of reality. The job itself attracts more often the powerhungry and anal retentive.

Rare is the situation where a cop makes things better and even then often too late.

Of all the risks to my life, limb, freedom, and financial security.. none has come close in real world ACTUAL RESULTS to that of the goddamn LEO.
