Can you lend me one of your Dobermans, and maybe a kite? That, combined with respirator and suit, would create a lasting impression amongst the tourists!
A tinfoil hat from klimmer and his fellow travellers would round out the ensemble.

years ago i was diagnosed with Haunta Virus
not fun
one of my friends called with a warning after his sister-in-law had died of it the previous year
he told me that if you survive the initial period of illness and get to feeling better, there is a temptation to resume normal activities
then as you go back to normal work and exercise, it flares up suddenly and you die
he warned me to take plenty of time to recover completely...

Did they say anything about developing an immunity by surviving it?

diseases evolve and adapt rapidly
many diseases have become resistant to all known cures
and our immune systems are constantly assaulted with an increasing array of new challenges
even worse is the dramatic increase in afflictions with 'no known cause'
is anyone studying the consequences to our biosphere of the mixing and combining of the chemical cesspool of fuels, combustion products, pharmaceuticals, plastics, pesticides, herbicides, preservatives, flavor packages, genetically modified organisms, cleaning fluids, radiological materials, vibration and noise pollution, and multi-frequency radio wave bombardment???
and not to forget the impact of solar storms...
and ancient diseases being re-released to the atmosphere as global warming thaws long-frozen tundra...
wake up, people!

Cross posted from Wayne Merry's thread:
Hi Wayne,
Welcome to the campfire. It is funny that the Hanta virus and your poem is cause for your first post. When I saw the report on the evening news about Curry Village, a reporter informed us that the mice live in the walls of the tent cabins. "Walls?" Then they show pictures of the inside of the tent that looks like the old off-white canvas, but seems to be too smooth: fake canvas walls, with insulation, I'd guess, well designed to house mice.
Best,
Roger
I understand they are tent cabins so that they would not be considered to be "permanent structures." If permanent structures are not allowed then how are the reported drywall interiors permitted? It is the insulation between the canvas exterior and the drywall interior that exacerbates this. Mice love insulation.
Why not satisfy all requirements simply by stretching canvas over 2x framing? If there are any mice inside you can see them. A few cats and we are done.
Mice can slip through cracks only 3/16" wide.

Today's LA Times...
Hantavirus in Yosemite: 230,000 more visitors notified
230,000 more notified
"A larger-than-normal deer mouse population could be a contributing factor, officials said Wednesday."
It is good to see that they have their keenest minds working on it, isn't it?

I received my PSA yesterday. Kind of late to even bother with butt covering at this point, IMO.
Cleanliness at all of the Valley dwellings is horrible and always has been.
Dear Yosemite National Park Visitor,
Every year we are proud to welcome almost four million people to Yosemite National Park. Thank you for your visit this summer.
As you may be aware, Yosemite has been in the news recently related to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), a rare but serious disease that occurs throughout the United States, usually in rural areas. Your recent overnight visit to Yosemite did not include a stay in lodging where the known hantavirus infections might have occurred; however, we wanted to take this opportunity to increase public awareness about hantavirus. We are contacting you as the reservation holder and we ask you to share the following information with the rest of your party.
Hantavirus can be contracted as a result of contact with urine, droppings or saliva from infected rodents, primarily deer mice. It is not spread person-to-person. State and NPS public health officials have confirmed that eight people who visited the park this summer have been diagnosed with HPS. Tragically, three people have died; the other five individuals have recovered.
Seven of the confirmed cases have been linked to overnight stays in June and July in Curry Village's Signature tent cabins, which have been closed indefinitely. The eighth case involves a visitor who stayed in multiple High Sierra Camps. We have reached out to reservation holders who stayed in these facilities since early June to provide information on HPS and to encourage anyone who exhibits hantavirus symptoms to seek medical attention.
Public health officials have no evidence at this time to indicate that persons who stayed elsewhere in the park this summer were at increased risk of exposure to hantavirus. Nevertheless, we want to ensure that all our guests have accurate and current information on hantavirus. For additional information about Yosemite and reports of hantavirus, please visit Yosemite’s website at http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/hantavirus.htm. If you have additional questions about hantavirus, you can find out more on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website at http://www.cdc.gov/hantavirus/ or by calling their hotline at 1-800-CDC-INFO.
Yosemite is working closely with public health officials to reduce the risk of hantavirus. We continue to make the health and safety of our visitors our top priority, and we hope to see you in one of our nation’s treasured national parks again soon.

Are there any hard numbers yet on how this may be affecting Valley visitor volume? Maybe the Ahwahnee will have a $50/night deal during the FaceLift, to attract people...

I hate meeces to pieces and keep traps set in my house always
Lois was defending them and against my killing ways a few years back. Whose laughing now?
Nobody. It's a concern but 30-40,000 people die of the flu each year so it shows that exotic Yosemite deaths make headlines. People have been dying from west nile in california as well
Peace

The LA Times article said that 50% of deer mice and 14% of other rodents around Curry tested positive for Hanta. Pretty scary numbers - particularly if you extrapolate that into the actual number of critters running around that are carriers. Any evidence that those percentages are increasing or have they likely always been that high? How often would one encounter aerosolized mouse particles on a typical climb? I guess we're lucky that the virus doesn't seem to survive too long in sunlight.

Why on EARTH is DNC not discussed in all these articles? Everyone is blaming the Park, but cleaning and maintaining the Curry tent cabins and the High Sierra camps is NOT NPS's responsibility!!

Again .....
Why didn't any of the employee housekeepers never become exposed?
They would have had a higher percentage of risk and exposure than any guest since they cleaned the cabins daily for months.

^^^ Yes, but they didn't sleep in the cabins. Well, at least they are't
supposed to. Since so little is really known about Hanta it is possible they
have developed resistance. Plus, when they are cleaning it is likely they
prop the doors open and are only in there for 5 or 10 minutes. Given the
large number of people who have been in a position to contract it but haven't
it is obvious that it isn't easily contracted.

Good question mr. Braun...? What is the concessionaire doing , besides closing the tent cabins , to correct the mouse housing...? It amazes me that most property owners ignore proper weather proofing ( mouseproofing ) procedures , then wonder why a dozen mice are in their living space..Duh...!
