I have had many "ghost" encounters in my life, dating back to elementary school.
The last experience was pretty heavy.
San Luis Obisbo July '07
I was on the Central Coast to do a paint job for a friend who was remodeling a house in SLO. The house belongs to his fiance's(Shannon) mom, and she was raised there.
My bro(Todd) is doing all the interior carpentry work during the day, so to avoid the dust I decide to work at night. While I had done some work during the day and not noticed or felt anything too strange, I did get a weird vibe about one of the hallways and the room at the end. But i was there to work and was pretty much on auto pilot, thanks to KPIG(what a great radio station!)
My first night working there went without incident. I go into many houses, new and old, alone, late at night, whatever- so I'm not automatically "spooked".
As the night went on I was working on some baseboards in a small bedroom adjacent to the living room where Todd's tools were gathered. The radio was turned off and I was zenning out. Then I felt a thud in the old wood floors and a sound came from the living room. It sounded like some tools were being moved. I was over it. It was late, and I must admit, I was a little spooked.
Next day, same scoop- show up when others are done for the day and plan to work til 2am or so. A little more defcon delta now, though, after the weirdness the night before.
I auto pilot it, just doin' my thing, but now I'm definitely seeing stuff in my peripheral vision, and the vibes coming from the back room down the hall are strong enough that I don't even look that direction. Am I getting myself all worked up or what?
These feelings get stronger the later it gets.
I was just finishing the only ladder work I had left, in the kitchen, when one of the little halogen track lights started swinging. Figured I had bumped it. It flickered and went out. I stashed the ladder in a far room because I wouldn't need it the whole rest of the job.
Back into the front room, where I'd heard the "thud", to do the finish work on the trim. I finished the base in the closet and got up to go get something in the other room.
Right there in the doorway, blocking my exit, was my ladder.
I flipped. I could barely breathe, like when dunked in cold water. I moved the ladder and scrambled to leave the house without forgetting to turn out lights and lock up. I was running so fast that I tripped outside, dropping all my stuff. I sat in my car and was scared to even look up at the house, feeling like there would be someone or something in the picture window.
As my car warmed up I realized I may have forgotten to lock the back door. Todd has heaps of expensive tools in there, so I had to double check. Right next to the back door is the "room at the end of the hallway". I was scared shitless going back there in the dark, and once again didn't even want to look up, or in a window, convinced I would see all the tools whirlwinding around the room Poltergeist style.
I made it back to my car for the drive back to Morro Bay, but was too freaked to even look in the rearview mirror!
I stopped at Taco Bell and the lady at the window said "Son, you look like you seen a ghost."
Turns out Shannon and her Mom had many experiences over the years- yeah, they didn't tell me til I finished the paintjob!
The Mom was scared out of the house when her bed went all earthquake simulator on her. Her room was the room at the end of the hall.
Guests who stayed in that room later refused to go back.
Shannon's room, where I heard the thud had blue and pink blob like "ghosts" (I picture "Ghostbusters") spinning on the bedposts when the girls were young.
The most telling part of the history of the house came years ago with a knock on the front door. It was an elderly man who said he was born and raised in that house. His father was and old school boat builder in Morro Bay and had built the house himself, from scratch.
I realized then, that the thud I heard/felt was the sound of the ladder "walking".
I've heard that houses being remodeled can stir up spirits.
Was the builder angry we were changing his original work,
or was he just trying to help me out?
The house was going up for rent....
I left the new tenants a little note, finger painted on the top of a kitchen cabinet.
JEFE PAINTED THIS HAUNTED HOUSE 7-07
That should confirm some stuff for them!
Oh, by the way, I drove back south a few days later for a job in Long Beach . A widower suffering from Alzheimer's had just passed on himself, in that very house where his wife had died too. All their possessions remained as left, full time machine, cobwebs and all.
I, once again, chose to work late in an old house that I SHOULD have been spooked in.
Nothing.

Had you heard the stories about the house being haunted before you took the job? My old house used to have all sorts of noises, but not believing in ghosts, I knew that there are plenty of natural ways for noises to occur.

Brian-
No. Not until the ladder moved itself from one end of the house to the other did I mention anything to the homeowner.
Her response was "Oh, I guess they're still there."
She hadn't lived there for years and had some kind of cleansing ceremony done.
Todd was a skeptic too, thinking that the thud in the floor must been a raccoon under the house. When Shannon told the stories of ghosts in her room as a kid, well, he's still a skeptic.

Although not superstitious, I heard that SuperTopo is haunted.
Well, it has a Ghost, anyway.

There used to be a kind of by itself huge old boarded up military hospital at Volunter Park in North Seattle, built in the late 1800's. It was on the old military grounds, and was the most spooky building. I did not know what it was but it had this ominous presence, and I found it one day hiking and was able to climb a tree next to it and go in thru a open windown that obviously someone else how figured out also. Literally it felt like a curtain of dread and sadness hung over the building. I had no idea what it had been or was until later, when I found out that it had been a military hospital for American soldiers in WW1 coming back from the war. Somehow it felt like the wood soaked up that gloom and death and held it for all those years. A presence I did not like.
The city burned the huge 5 or 6 story building to the ground about 20 years ago to get rid of it. I have photos of it somewhere, man it was a eerie place.
Anyone else familiar with the building?
