In his day he was like the Bachar of the UK.
I remember seeing a video of him in England, climbing a route with very spotty gear and you could hear him say, "Jesus Wept"! lol

My recollection is that he died of cancer some ten years ago (or so).

Dang!! So sorry that I messed up on that one, Gobee! I was thinking of Pete Livesey, not Ron Fawcett. Must engage brain...must engage brain...

I think the great climber Ben Moon also had cancer. (but is doing fine I think). Maybe it's the water. Or the beer?

The account* of an early free in a day ascent of the West face of the Cap written by his partner / girlfriend (whose name, unfortunately escapes me right now, Jill?), is an Uber Classic.
"Ronald, I am fatigued." Only a Britt could say that.
* pretty sure it was in Mountain, may be in mirrors in the cliffs or games climbers play, or one of those.

I did a ton of climbing with Ron in the early 70s, including our first time up El Cap.
His old girlfriend's name is Gill Kent and I talked to her a few days ago about Ron, who is running up a storm, apparently.

Ron's autobiography is published in March by the same people who produced Jerry Moffat's excellent Revelations. It's ghosted by Ed Douglas so should be a good read.

How many ascents of Thin Red Line (JT) after Ron put it up? I saw woodward on it long ago, but rarely see much chalk on that one.

I heard a story about Fawcett on the Bachar Yerian. It was passed down many times before I heard it. Apparently Ron on a long runout section, kept looking for the next bolt, climbing higher and looking again. He finally spotted it, but it was below him and off to the side. He didn't think he could get back to it to clip, and rather than take an uncontrolled fall, jumped off for an eighty footer, then relead the pitch.

John,
I love this image of you and Ron Fawcett.
A picture say a thousand words, and this one for me says, pure bliss!

Ron looks like he needs a cheeseburger in that photo.
And, John, nice shirt. For some reason the weird swirly shape of Ron, and the weird swirls on your shirt made me feel like I was having a shroom flashback or something.

Largo- i was hoping you would put up that shot-great ! Fawcett did a tv thing long ago , I think f/a lord of the Flies with " Come on arms , do your stuff "
If I remember right, he also traversed Stanage Edge in 6 hours, solo. Something like 90 pitches , up to 5.12
