I just got a phone call from a friend this a.m. and was told of another climbers death. His name was Mark Winslow, some of you may have known him. Mark was a sick YOUNG man. I was fortunate to have met him yet it was sad to have heard his personal story. I tried to help Mark but he's dead now. All I can do now is grieve and hope that he accepted the free gift before he took his life. Please, I'm begging the climbing community to open their eyes and ears and be receptive to my plea! I'm not preaching religion I'm just sharing the Truth, Gods word..."I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No man cometh unto the Father but by me." John 14:6

My friend Bob was a born again Christian and ended up taking his own life anyway.
There are many levels of pain and suffering. What works for you won't work for everyone.

If you did know Mark Winslow (RIP), might it not be more appropriate to add a suitable tribute to the "Remembering Mark Winslow" thread? Something respectful of Mark, his family and his friends?

To Mark's family:
So sorry to hear of your son's death. Mark confided in me and asked me for help about two month's ago. I can tell you he was sincere in his quest to get help. I wish I could have done more. I am sorry.

Mighty Hiker,
It seems as if 'illusiondweller' isn't too concerned about being respectful. The purpose of this thread (and the other one that was deleted) is to push an agenda.
That's an awful thing to do, considering that he claims to have been friends with the person he is now disrespecting.

The OP is in quite a bit of pain. He's not grieving the way I and I think others would grieve, but let's show some compassion. Someone is really hurting here.

Sorry, BCD, but I thoroughly disagree with your take. Have you had any friends take their lives? It's difficult enough without being criticized for "having an agenda." My faith is all I have in those situations. When you, in effect, tell illusiondweller to keep his faith to himself, you're trying to take that faith from him at the moment he needs it most. The Christian faith is meant to be shared. If you disagree, express the contrary opinion on another thread.

No disrespect at all, completely the opposite. A plea for salvation before someone else dies is the most respectful plea I can think of. This is what I would want others to do for me.

I take it that you did try to help the youngster through his pain.
A hidden agenda? I don't know and I don't care (though I suspect there may be one), a young person decided that life wasn't for him. Who helped? Did you, illusiondweller?

Thank you all for your respectful comments. There is no word of a memorial service for Mark as of yet. I will post as soon as I get any news of one. Mark was a resident of Alpine, CA at the time of his death.

That's a good question Patrick Sawyer. I have asked myself that question also. My answer is then this...What have I lost other than my life? I'M DEAD! I learned how to love by being willing to sacrifice myself for the benefit of God and others with no thought of return (Mathew 22:37-40). By doing this it also helped myself and others to overcome the world and its ways. Then I die and become worm food. Not a bad exchange in my book!
More importantly let's ask the question, "What if there is a God?" Then, I and those I have helped save from eternal hell are going to live again in eternity with our Maker, as supernatural as it sounds. Honestly, I can't imagine living again in a place described as hell for eternity, as supernatural as it sounds! Some say its "false hope" putting your faith in God. Let's think about that...so, I put my faith in something that isn't there, experience the benefits associated with it, then die, not ever knowing that it was all a hoax, BECAUSE IM DEAD! On the other hand, it turns out to be true...false hope? It's all about hope!
I am not posting this to convince anyone to "convert" to any religion or to raise anyones dander, although that's inevitable. That is not my "agenda." I'm just hoping that even just one will wonder like I did and seek the Truth before they die tomorrow.

I would hope that what someone in crisis or serious emotional pain would be advised to seek and would actually receive is professional care and counseling. Having staffed in a crisis center and mental health emergency outreach service I would say that there would likely be plenty of time to talk about 'salvation' once a person has received appropriate care and has recovered from whatever circumstances that led them into such pain.

So I read this and I cry. I used to be such a "straight edge" in the past. Straight Edge meaning probably my unkindness cut people. I was so sure that there was just right and wrong, black and white. Wrong Lynne. Some years of pain, challenge, death and dying along with a myriad of major life problems have given me a trickle of wisdom and compassion about this life we all live.
So today my heart aches for those whose lives hurt so bad they end them. They feel more pain and anguish than most. I don't know why.
The one that ended their life and was a jesus lover....well, jesus loved him immensely. I know that God being our creator knows the struggles of his creation....even more He knows our hearts. Because He knows our hearts he will bring each one of us to His. Including the young man this thread is written for.
It's not for us to judge. Our sole purpose on this planet is to love God and to love each person that crosses our path on a daily basis. lynne
