A few days ago I found a decent boulder a couple miles up from the Geothermal area of Mammoth (photos) . I went back today and started putting together a sequence when the gunfire began . I knew there was a little makeshift rifle range in the area , so I tried to ignore the nagging fear of a stray bullet , and kept climbing for a few minutes . About 4 or 5 shots per minute were popping off , and I could see a vehicle parked about 250 yards away so I hid behind a tree and hoped they'd move along shortly , but they didn't and the shots got louder as if they were aiming in my direction . I could also distinguish shots being fired from a second location (the 'grassy knoll' wtf) . As the firing continued I grabbed all my stuff and moved behind the boulder to change shoes and pack up . I retreated uphill to get further out of range and eventually circled around to get back to my car . Needless to say I'm abandoning the project and moving on to safer grounds elsewhere .

I got invited to go shooting with my brother one day at a common shooting "range" in some canyon outside of LA. After we got all of the guns out and ready, he took his .357 (if I recall correctly) and stuck it in his holster and then walked out to set up targets. I asked him about it and then heard a terrifying, yet funny, story about other guys down the road once shooting at his targets as he set them up. He then said "If anyone starts shooting at me, I want to be able to shoot back."

How about calling the appropriate agency?

I got shot at while bouldering about 20 yards beyond the Albuquerque city line. I heard something hit the boulder about 5' to my right. I turned around and saw some 12 yr old JD standing in his backyard with his BB gun. I went down there and his 16 yr old sister answered the door. I went easy on her but told her to tell him to screw his head on right...or else.

This story is why I quit hunting - too many stupid f*#kers with guns. Not trying to turn this into an anti-gun thread but just saying that after bullets flew over my head deer hunting and being peppered by shot while duck hunting I had enough.

You should have called 911, said you being shot at I and too terrified to move. I bet the sheriff would have arrived very quickly.

been listenening to the Los Altos Rod and Gun for about 40 years.
Up at Castle, and on a good day, clear over at the Slabs.

Only good thing, you can hunt deer in Castle Rock State Park and nobody knows.I usually dress em out at shady rock.

Badd thing, you pop off an SOS and the Ranger thinks its the Gun Club.
