In 1986 I had a new Toyota Pick Up (the only new vehicle i ever owned), I was leading solid 5.10, I had gotten back into kayaking and I was a good Class IV boater, I had the boat on the truck and my rack in the back. I was geared to living out of the Toyota for the summer.
This was before all the outdoor industry magazines were printing stories like "The 30 Best Climbing Routes You've Never Heard Of"-The way you found out about a place was by talking to someone who had been there and done that-But you had to be somewhere that you'd meet that person.
I got information on the Payette River from when I was in Colorado-on the Numbers.
I pulled into the lot, stepped out of the truck with a cheap can of beer in my hand. A gentleman from Oakland had just rolled a fat Bomber and within five minutes I had a joint in one hand, a beer in the other, and we were discussing plans to boat the South Fork of the Salmon River. That trip didn't happen BUT I'm thinking for me the wave was cresting right there- I was as good a climber as I was ever going to be, same with my boating, I was on the road and drifting to the tune of whatever advice someone was willing to give me regarding something that you had to do, somewhere that you had to see or someone that you had to meet.
Not to say that life has been poor since then-far from it- but at that point I had the feeling that things were where I had imagined I might make it to someday.
I'd like to hear your stories of when you were feeling the way that you thought you would.

I don't think I've ever been cool or have much potential to be in the future.

Nefarius you probably weren't born yet-
Long, hard and Free steered an entire generation
And I suppose, to a certain extent, so did the South Park Cartoons

antiquarian sense of history will kill you every time.

what you need a is monumental sense of history to propel you onto the next absurd objective, whatever it may be.

There have been times when I thought I had reached the pinnacle of my coolness, only to realize I was actually a dweeb. Now I'm not so sure when or if I will achieve cool. Will let you know if it happens.

1978; I was 24. Sure of myself, as 24 year olds are want to be. Skiing 30,000 vertical per a day the previous winter. Trained by hiking/running 3000 vertical three times a week(in 1.5 hours, 8000' to 11000'). Climbed both Half Dome and Alpamaya Paquinya (in Bolivia) that year. Then I ate the wrong ice cream bar in La Paz, blew out my liver with hepatitis. My girl friend dumped me. Blew out the engine in my VW bug. Promised financial aid fell through at Univ. of Colorado. Life's been a slow down hill since then. ha

I was the coolest when during a session of teaching a young girl how to drive, I laughed. She was trying to brake and used the gas pedal instead while parking. She unintentionally rammed my car into a truck that was parked in the slot in front of us. She did such a good job that I couldn't stop laughing... It was a perfect hit.
