So Carrie and I went out to ::gasp:: boulder up at the local peak today and on the way up I see this white rabbit hopping through the bushes. Being a softie, and knowing it was coyote food, I gingerly approached it to catch it. It jetted off INTO this field of poison oak.

So what do I do now? Well - I can't very well leave it there, can I?

No.

So I go into the field, rub up about every other red or green leaf of poison oak and slowly herd the rabbit toward her. I start trying to chuck things at it to get it moving, but it's so tame that's not an option either. So finally I go crashing through the PO and snag the rabbit.

Okay, now what? I have a big ol' crash pad on, we still want to climb .. .

So we see some other boulderers and ask if they have any cordelette. No go.

So, we do what any of you would have done - we stuffed it into her back pack and started bouldering while the pack hopped around a bit.

I now have a rabbit in my dog's crate. Anyone want one? I've scored cams on climbing forays, but never a rabbit.

If it was a Jack rabbit, they will get HUGE, rather quickly and they do not take well to captivity. The cage makes it rather squirrilly,(sp) and they generally do not survive long. Release it into the wild, it will be able to breed and make more little jackrabbits.

A related joke:

Two rabbits are being chased by a pack of coyotes and the rabbits dash under a manzanita. The coyotes are surrounding them, snarling and gnashing and huffing and puffing with threats of condemnantion of the manzanita bush. The one rabbit turns to the other and says: "what should we do, make a run for it, or wait till we outnumber them?"

If not a Jackrabbit, take it to an animal rescue in your area, and ask them how the little feller will adapt.

Totally not a wild rabbit. Big, white rex rabbit. And it's house trained and doesn't mind parties, children, or dogs.

Free to good home! I have named it "Booty."
