Some people will respond, "Well, if you don't have anything to hide then it shouldn't matter."
We all have something to hide and to keep secure, namely our identity, finances, and our well being, how about our personal lives? Imagine if you are critical of the government (dissention is patriotic), you invented some new revolutionary technology and want to reap the rewards and keep the know how secret?, found the golden pot of treasure at the end of the rainbow?, all the good reasons to keep important worthy secrets are plentiful and we should have the right to do so.
If you haven't watched the following NOVA program then you should (you can watch it on line for free). It is really far worse than I ever thought possible. George Orwell's 1984 has nothing on the NSA warrantless wiretapping of ALL DATA of ALL AMERICANS, 24/7/365 days a year!
NOVA: The Spy Factory
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/spyfactory/
Check-out: the video, ask the expert (great Qs and unbelievably scarry answers), the New Thought Police. This all is very, very disturbing to me. Seems as though Obama is not going to do squat about it, and all this illegal and massive shreading of the Constitution happened by Bush et al. I am very concerned and so should you be.
That isn't all! How about Radio-frequency identification RFIDs that can be placed on and in everything???
Here is a great thorough article from Wikipedia on the technology and this entire abuse of our liberties. We can all be tracked and the potential to track us is easily available even if you don't have a cell phone. You are a consumer are you not? You use credit cards at times don't you? You could easily have an RFID chip on you right now within a product of some type that you wear of carry.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RFID
Do you know that your cell phone can secretly bug you without you ever knowing about it? The feds: FBI, CIA etc., and even criminals who know how to do it can turn your cell phone on remotely and hear your conversations without you ever knowing. Our cell phones come loaded with a bug, or the software to instantly turn it into a remote bug can be sent through a message that you don't even have to answer.

Sometimes I really hate this corrupt evil world we live in. Maybe the Amish have it right. Fore go all technology, but then maybe that isn't enough? We are driving straight away to the final prophetic end, right off the cliff, and many don't know about it or don't care.
This is not the world I want or that I want for my children. Makes me want to take my family and live off the land and just climb and adventure together. Forget the world. Native Americans did it for thousands of years; I'm envious of their ability to do so. Wow, I could climb everyday.
Please Lord, return quickly.

Don't worry. After the massive economic crash combined with the EMT attack from Iran followed by our total deleting of said country and following the spread of a radioactive cloud over all the planet, you won't be using your cellphone anyway. CHEERS!!

OK. First step - this is science. Realize there isn't a god that's going to come and save you from The Man. So, now that you've progressed and are ready to take accountability for your own actions and the outcome of it all, let's talk.

Of course the gov't leans towards fascism/totalitarianism, that's why it needs to be smaller and marginalized to basic duties. The Fed gov't needs to play a smaller role in our country, not larger. They've proven that they always screw sh#t up and spend our money unwisely.

Old news - when I still worked for Verizon - we had a "government requested bridge circuit" installed in 2002 at the headend at our One Wilshire location.
What is a "government requested bridge circuit"?
It is a full traffic circuit parallel tap that captured EVERY bit and byte of Verizon internet traffic in the entire Western region.
You want more - in 2001 we installed a similar tap circuit into each and every Central Office that allows the local police/sheriff agency to access individual phone calls. These circuits were wired directly into the access control computer that governs the entire network switching system in that office.
This differs from a traditional "tap" that would be placed on a single suspect line. By T1'ing direct into the interface - an agency can access ANY AND ALL lines that originate within an office.
Of course, the "rules" state that before they could access a suspicious call - they first had to have a subpoena - but with a hard wire connection that the Telco could not monitor - we had to take them at their word.
Yeah.
Right.

Tracking the travel is one thing, pegging the travel to IP addresses is quite a bit more unsettling. I'll be using an anonymizer next time I buy tix online...

I'm reading all the comments, thanks.
Khanom - from one of the articles you posted there is a link to this one from the ACLU:

Well, I did an experiment tonight since this is bothering me so bad. At first I put my cell phone with it on and in standby mode, into a lead-lined bag for traveling with film, and dialed it from another phone and it rang. Didn't shield it.
Then I wrapped the cell phone with ordinary aluminum foil. Rolled it up like a pig in the blanket with about a foot of foil, so it wrapped tight around it. Called the phone and this time it worked. It didn't ring. It shielded it really well.
Best maximum protection: don't carry a cell phone.
Second best maximum protection: my advice is to take the battery out and then wrap the battery and phone in aluminum foil just in case there is anything connected seperatley and directly to the battery that transmits.
Third best protection: wrap the phone in aluminum foil in standby/on mode. This should stop anything coming in or any transmitting going out. Should stop any remote listening in "bug" mode or GPS mode. Try it!
Worst possible scenerio: walk around like a complete bafoon with your cell phone on in standby mode totally oblivious to the fact that you can be tracked remotely while continually sending out a signal: This is Who I am and This is Where I Am. Please Listen In or Read My Text Messages Whenever You Would Like, Just Don't Let Me Know About It. I'm an Open Book. I Have Nothing to Hide. By the Way, While You Are At It, Here is All My personal Data and My Bank Account Info If You Need It. Thank You.

Years ago before any of this stuff the technology was already in place to track cell phones for Law enforcement. I've seen the equipment and software in action.
Big Brother is watching you if they need to whether you have a cell phone or not.

nefarious,
I'm not so sure religious people can totally ignore science in the world, it is definately out there (the cause for so much war throughout all modern history), and I'm pretty sure that scientists can't ignore religion in the world either(the tools in war in all modern history). Neither one can prove or disprove the other, they are separate parts of reality in life.
The issue at hand is politics anyway, not science.

Yeah I agree .... usually people that haven't the slightest clue what's going on resort to saying the usual stupid "tin foil" lines.
Anyways ... here's how you can tell if you're phone is coming out of standby and "listening".
In standby it pings the cell site but that transmit pulse is pretty short and is normal.
But when it goes into listening mode the battery is being drawn continuously at it's rated transmitting current, much higher than in standby.
Tap between the battery and the phone (requires hack) and log the current drain. You'll need an analogue to digital converter to a uart to a serial interface and you can just leave the phone hooked to your serial port on your computer.
If the phone doesn't start transmitting for days you're not worth the trouble. Maybe start talking about doing some high security hacks against the govt or some such (you know what I mean) on your favorite monitored govt internet site. That'll get their attention.
Heheheh
