Italian alpinist Riccardo Cassin will turn 100 tomorrow, on January 2nd. As it's not every day that someone in our community turns 100, I thought we could start celebrating a little early. (It's now 2nd January in Italy.)

Congrats!

What if he autographed some vintage 'biners and auctioned them off to benefit Bridwell?

i have some to contribute, thought the 'JCA' stamp would devalue them...

There must already be hundreds of thousands of carabiners autographed (stamped) with the word "Cassin". And other odds and ends... Dating from the 1930s onward. He sure invented, and manufactured, a lot of stuff. :-)

Glad you stopped by Riccardo!

I have been looking for a place to post this excellent Ken Wilson article and interview with Cassin. From Mountain 22, July 1972.

Some current articles about Cassin.
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/riccardo-cassin-a-climber-who-leads-them-all-1056657.html

"A book, entitled Riccardo Cassin: Cento volti di un grande alpinista ("Riccardo Cassin: One Hundred Faces of a Great Alpinist"), has been produced to mark the occasion, containing one hundred testimonies from people connected with Cassin, including Edouard Frendo, Georges Livanos, John F. Kennedy, Reinhold Messner, Carlo Mauri, Walter Bonatti, Gianni Brera and Candido Cannavò."

The Climbing Magazine interview:

And a whole bunch that are in Italian and German, including this one from his home town of Lecco:

This is great. Following this line of thinking, maybe some of you aren't familiar with Giusto Gervasutti's book, "Gervasutti's Climbs" (1957). I can't recommend this book highly enough. Just incredible. You can find it inexpensively online. Back in 1975 Guido here, lent me his copy. Since then I have got my own and re-read the entire volume. It is not large. But vibrates.

best, ph.

I know that there is a recurring, and ultimately meaningless and futile, debate as to who is the "greatest" climber of all time, but there is in my mind no doubt that Cassin should be on any short list for that recognition, and the fact that he not only survived a long-lasting career at the cutting edge of climbing during a period when so many of his contemporaries did not, but has now made it to 100 just adds to his legend. Happy Birthday Ricardo and best wishes for still more to come.

Wow. Happy Century Mark. It just staggers the mind. It's incredibly heartwarming that one of the absolute greats of all time has lasted all this while, leading the way technically and in spirit, but obviously exceptionally supportive of teammates and indeed climbers generally. Never hurts to repeat the line that I think Long or somebody attributed to Bridwell (or wherever it originally comes from), it won't matter in the end what you've managed to get up, it's how many people you've helped along the way. I guess directly or by inspiration both count! Cheers to a great guy.

Can't helped but comment on one line in the interview posted above, to the effect of having had 27 homemade pitons and placed them 55 or 56 times. It isn't 100 percent clear which of the three great FAs that refers to, seemingly the Walker. If I recall this route is somewhere around 30-35 pitches, so they would have been placing an average of less than one piton per pitch. Even if that doesn't count belays, this is ridiculously few placements!! At that era, I would guess that the concept of protection for its own sake didn't really exist, you just 4th classed until you got to a tough move, banged in a pin, clipped and yarded on it, then climbed on. The Diagonal Crack to which he refers is probably 5.9 or 10a OW and was obviously climbed 4th class. Wow again.
