Saw a bunch of people get speeding tickets going into the campground at redrocks. The copper sits right at the end of the pavement before you turn in. You are going down a hill and the limit goes from 35 to 15...... it is a 250 dollar fine... watch out if you are going there soon and try to let others know about this b.s. speed trap. The cop was there right at dusk too, when may climbers are returning...

It's true! At the end of September I got nabbed for going 30 mph (in the 15 zone). The ranger was impossible to see in the dark even though she was parked right on the side of the road. She took pity on me and wrote me up for only $125 (!)
She left right after she finished with me and we sat in our campsite and watched people fly down that hill one after another. Life is so unfair...

Thanks for the tip. Good one.
But at the same time I gotta say I really dislike it when folks speed through campgrounds.
But the fastest vehicle I saw last week going through Ryan (in Josh) had a light bar and green stripes... talk about a cloud of dust.

Fallow the speed limits when around a campground. I'm certain the cops had had complaints or they wouldn't have been there. I've had my share of tickets over the years, and I never bitched about them because I deserved them.

There was a motorcycle fatality there 2 years ago when we were there. Not 100 yards from the campground entrance. We were coming in from Vegas and had to go ALL the way around to get into the campground. I tried to talk my way around the road block, we could see the entrance! But when they told me what they were dealing with, (scooping up body parts) I apologized and told them I felt for them.
So it seems that spot has had some problems, not related to the campground, not related to climbers.

I too remember watching people get ticked there...pretty easy to exceed 15 mph on that hill. You basically have to break the whole way down not to speed...

last january i got pulled over at the same spot (leaving the campground). two cops were parked in the lanes of the road talking, one truck facing each way, when i came around the corner at the top of the hill and saw them. since i didn't want to rear-end a parked cop that was fully obstructing traffic, i slowed to a near stop.
one cop pulled off the road, the other waved my past. as soon as i went by he flipped on his rollers and pulled me over.
in a total WTF moment, he threatened to give me a ticked because i was going 'fast' then slowed down when i saw him. when i asked how 'fast' he clocked me at, he said the other guy clocked me at 13 mph... but he knew i was going faster because i slowed down when i saw him. to which i replied, 'well, you were blocking the whole road, of course i slowed down!'
he was forced to let me go, but ten minutes later he gave my friend a $400+ ticked for going 30 mph. watch out!

hey there chris... say, i just stepped in to see what all this was about, even though i can't go camping... and say:
that was very nice to do that... not only for the folks that could get ticketed, but far-above---for safety issues, too....

Copper nabbed me good at the Red Rocks campground March 2008 at 8am. 45 in a 15 = $250. I'm 40 and this early 20's authority figure wannabe starts with "Son, do you know how fast you were going?" Smooth negotiations by my lawyer climbing partner got us no where. "Sir, you are driving at reckless speeds by a campground. What if a young child ran into the road." Which cactus was the child hiding behind that I didn't see him on this barren desert field a mile from the campground? That evening, I watched him nab 4 more suckers. Yeah they have found an easy racket praying on frugal campers to fill there quota. And out where they won't scare away the high-rollers.
BTW, try actually driving 15mph on this 4-lane wide road. Its painfully difficult. Can you tell this has left a psychological scar yet?

Christ guy, spend $75 bucks on a good speed trap buster. If you are within a mile of the cop the first time he uses his radar gun, you will be notified and slow down.
A good one costs about $350. I got one after getting a ticket on a open country road (I am usually not a speeder). The ticket and traffic school cost more than the detector, and it has saved me NUMEROUS times. Beltronics RX65 - highly recommended

I wouldn't recommend wasting money on a radar detector. Alot more cops are using laser, which is aimed at you, and by the time your detector picks it up, you're already caught.

My son is a state trooper and he hates that kinda bs. He'd rather give tickets to those that piddle along in the left lane on the interstate and never pull over to let anyone pass.

I have picked up a few laser alerts...I wasn't speeding.
It's true, once you pick it up it's too late. It is also true though that 100% of the alerts that have saved me were Radar traps...not laser. "Most" agencies use radar.
Khanom, where are you getting laser tickets? I think I make it down your direction frequenly, and I would like to avoid getting nabbed by laser!

The cost of those tickets you could have stayed at the Bellagio!
I despise it when the cops ticket in the slow zones, going 35 in a 25, especially in an area where safety is not a concern. Sheesh, think they'd have better things to do.

The laser thing is curious...
When they first "hit" in Cali, I saw them all over. Always the same routine too - Driving down the highway, crest the top of a hill or overpass, or come around a bend and there's this TurdBurglar, in a uniform, standing there in a Weaver Stance, like's he's doing his weekly ego stroke-off at the shooting range. In front of him, there'd be a row of other piggers waiting for the word on who to pull over. They were getting a TON Of cars this way...
Then, all of the sudden, they kind of disappeared. Once in a great while now I'll see a guy hiding on an on-ramp in his little Weaver Stance (didn't Weaver become old after Barnaby went off the air?), but it's pretty rare. Odd. Pretty much, most of the traps I see are not laser.
