Waiting for the results to pour in last night my friends entertained me with various cobbled together video clips of Sarah Paulin. Selective editing can make most anyone out to be slow or funbling, but Paulin seemed something beyone even this -a genuine moron and stumblebum. True, the journalists (both men and women) really went after her, which begs the bigger question(s): why did they single her out and how was it they got such spectacular and incontrovertible results in making her seem like the worst VP choice in the history of the world? I'm fairly non-political, but I wonder who could possibly look at and listen to Paulin and think: there's the natural leader of this country, right there! The idea staggers me, that folks would hear her and throw a vote her way. Imagine the world's reaction is McCain had won.

JL - the choice of Palin was a true reflection of McCain's weaknesses after all these years; still thinking with his little head, still acting with reckless abandonment, and fond of shooting at the hip (i.e., as in easier to hit the foot).
In the end, he got what he deserved, a well placed kick in the rear. In turn, Bush got a well deserved kick in the nuts. (Sorry, I couldn't contain myself).

That's all well and good but she still has to pick the best advice.
She was picked to appease the religious right and that was a huge political blunder. The religious right would never have voted liberal Democrat. McCain would have done better if he'd chosen someone to the left of himself to try to draw the moderate left.
Someone said in another thread that Palin will emerge as the new leader of the Republican party. All I can say is that I certainly hope so. If that prediction holds true we won't have to worry about another Republican administration for another generation.

"Someone said in another thread that Palin will emerge as the new leader of the Republican party."
This is fantastically goofy, if true. The woman showed so little acumen when engaged in real conversations with real journalists that you have to seriously wonder who could peg her as the leader of a political party. On the basis of what? How could this even be a remote possibility to any thinking human being?

Most folks who voted for McCain convinced themselves that McCain would not die, so no big deal if Palin was VP. Some of those folks are here on the taco. And some, such as Blue and Lois seem to think it is no big deal if she became the Pres because she would have good advisors, as evidenced above.
Its mind boggling how naive this is, but what can you do.
50 million people convinced themselves that either it didn't matter, because McCain would not die, or that Palin would do an okay job if he did.

Ted Stevens will win in Alaska, be forced to resign and then Palin will win his Senate seat in a special election.
Mark my words.

That's exactly what convinced me that I was delusional, that I thought I understood my own country, but I was all wrong, 50 million times over. When I was looking at the amp of those middle states filling in with red (last night) I had to wonder who all those people were, what they were thinking, what hopes were they drawing from the likes of Paulin?

Palin's only draw was that she pushed conservative christian values. She has nothing to offer on domestic relations, foreign policy or economic issues. She was their path to combining chuch and state, which they have been advocating for years, and which ultimately lead to their defeat.
Her pick as a new leader of the party would again show that republicans do not learn from their mistakes.

Newsweek dishes up e dirt on Palin that they would'nt release before the election.
http://www.adn.com/news/alaska/newsreader/story/579412.html
> While publicly supporting Palin, McCain's top advisers privately fumed at what they regarded as her outrageous profligacy. An angry aide characterized the shopping spree as "Wasilla hillbillies looting Neiman Marcus from coast to coast.”
> One aide estimated that she spent "tens of thousands" more than the reported $150,000, and that $20,000 to $40,000 went to buy clothes for her husband.
> A vast majority of the clothes were bought by a wealthy donor, who was shocked when he got the bill.
> Palin used low-level staffers to buy some of the clothes on their credit cards.
> McCain himself rarely spoke to Palin during the campaign, and aides kept him in the dark about the details of her spending on clothes because they were sure he would be offended.
> The Obama campaign was provided with reports from the Secret Service showing a sharp and disturbing increase in threats to Obama in September and early October, at the same time that many crowds at Palin rallies became more frenzied.

She's been talking about having an important role in the national Republican party in the future, which to me translates into "I'm going to run for president". It will be an interesting test for a Republican party that now has to find a new raison d'etre. To be blunt, the ungainly alliance forged by Richard Nixon in 1968, and depended on by Reagan and the Bushes, has blown apart. The religious right, rural working class whites, traditional conservatives, and neo-conservatives had little enough in common except what they claimed were "values", and a lust for power. That coalition should now disintegrate, particularly given the excess influence it gave to the religious. They simply don't have much in common.
If the ideologues and religious faction takes control, refuses to learn from what happened last night, and pushes Palin as its candidate, it seems very likely that will lead to formation of a new, more centrist and truly conservative party, with the fringe elements out in the cold.

I don't recommend underestimating how powerful the religious right is. Usually California is strongly in the blue, yet we voted to ban gay marriage. The religious right promoted this.
In California, Obama won soundly, yet prop 8 passed. So some of those same people who voted for Obama voted to ban gay marriage.
Barack Obama
6,286,024 61.1%
John McCain
3,828,147 37.2%
08 - Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry
YES: 5,358,796 52.5%
NO: 4,866,831 47.5%
It is interesting to look at the map on CNN and look at each state and see how close the vote was.
http://www.cnn.com/
In some the margins were a few thousand.
I think this is why we can not go to sleep between elections. We need to keep track of what our leaders are doing and voice our opinions to them as to how they are doing. We can not forget the elections can change the course of History. We likely would not have gone to war in Iraq if Bush had lost.
Edit: John, sorry about the troll comment. I first posted to your thread, then I thought that this couldn't be John Long as he doesn't usually start political threads, so I thought someone had hijacked your ID or found a way to mimic it.

Can you imagine what kind of sound bites would exist if she had given more than two interviews with the regular press instead of limiting her exposure to only friendly outlets?
It will be interesting if she becomes a more public figure without regular handlers keeping her from idiot-sounding appearances.
