Shrinks to 6 points? It leaped upwards from 5.5 to 6.6 today at RCP.
In fact 4 of the 6 national tracking polls have him at his highest point ever.
538.com has boosted him from an 80% win chance on Monday to a 91% win chance today. If this is losing then I'm all for it!
Chance of landslide 36%!!!

The global financial meltdown has caused a dramatic shift in the 2008 presidential race, according to the latest NEWSWEEK poll. With four weeks left in the presidential campaign, Barack Obama now leads John McCain by double digits, 52 percent to 41 percent among registered voters—a marked shift from the last NEWSWEEK poll, conducted one month ago, when the two candidates were tied at 46 percent.

It appears that the challenges for Obama/Biden now are the possibility of some in the campaign developing a complacent/overconfident attitude, an October surprise from Bush, ensuring good turnout at the polls, and minimizing chicanery during the voting process. There's probably little they can do to address the race factor - those who will allow their vote to be affected by his race probably can't easily be persuaded to change engrained attitudes.
Also, of winning at least a few of the so-called "red" states.

Radical, they know the Republican party is over.
Their foreign policy was rejected in 2006.
Their free-market worshipping economic policy is about to be rejected, thanks to the events of the last month.
And the only thing left are social conservatives clinging to their guns and religion. Well, that and their fear and hate, which we've seen the last week. But that's it! And to top it off, the demographics are not with them: it's a white people's party, when white people are facing minority status.
It's a bankrupt movement, and they know it. They're headed for several years in the wilderness.

It's just possible that the Republicans have been keeping a Democratic skeleton in the closet, or have some other October surprise to spring. Their campaign seems in disarray, so it would more likely be done by the news media at this point. The conservative news media, that is - the news media, like other institutions such as the courts, is almost inevitably conservative. It's business.
Undoubtedly there are skeletons in Obama's past, or more likely in the records of his associates. All of the items mentioned by LEB have a well-worn feel to them. If there was any substance to them, the issues would have gained traction long ago. If only so that the news media could piously claim to being "fair and balanced". Hence the stories this week on minor irregularities in donations. That's all the news media could come up with, to 'balance' the McCain/Palin meltdown.
A week is a long time in politics - but the 25 days remaining until your election aren't very long, in context of a campaign that has been going on for months. The Republican/reporter party has undoubtedly been digging for months for anything it could find with which to criticize both candidates, but especially Obama, given that there really wasn't much on him. Palin, the economic crisis, and McCain's resulting behaviour, were a godsend to them.
It's pretty hard to now tar Obama with associations and decisions that were for the most part years ago, and minor in nature. And Obama's having less experience also means he has less of a record to be pinned to.
Right-thinking Republicans, if there is a future for their party, should now be looking ahead, admitting the likelihood that they will be wiped out in November, and asking themselves whether their party can and should be saved, and if so how it should be re-invented. If they jettison their fringe elements, and move toward the centre, it would be a good day for democracy.

LEB you're on crack! Closer and closer scrutiny? McCain's entire strategy is to SCRUTINIZE OBAMA! That's what the McCain story is! He realized he couldn't win on his merits alone and so he decided to tear Obama down and now it has backfired as he realizes that he has become that which he said he despises and his moderate supporters jump ship while his right wing nutballs work themselves into a blind frenzy. They have scrutinized Obama so much that the overscrutiny is NOW THE STORY.
He said Obama was incompetent and yet every debate Obama shows clearly he has a firm grasp of the issues.
He said Obama was radical and unpredictable and every debate it's Obama that looks like the calm collected one.
Now he's insisting that Obama pals around with terrorists and so finally people have had enough and are realizing that McCain is the unpredictable, radical one.
The result? A 1.1 jump for Obama yesterday with another 1.1 jump while we slept last night at www.realclearpolitics.com
Also Obama in the last few weeks has gone from being DOWN 2-3 points in likability to having a commanding 11 point lead. Intrade market odds went from roughly 50/50 a few weeks ago to a 78/22 split leaning towards Obama.
So further scrutiny of Obama isn't going to help, LEB. That is exactly what is currently blowing up in McCain's face.

THE ABSOLUTE BEST THING for OBAMA is for McCain and Palin to KEEP PUTTING BOTH FEET DOWN THEIR THROATS, so that the American people can see those lunatics for what they really are-- lunatics.
The more those two say, the worse they look to the majority.

Holy crap woman. It's hard to have a conversation with someone who doesn't pay any attention to the world going on around her. McCain's campaign began imploding yesterday and his supporters are screaming "traitor", "terrorist," and "kill him" and I'M the one being emotional?
It's emotional to quote polls? It's emotional to point out that Ayers has been all over the media for the past week or two? How much bigger of a story does it need to be for you to be satisfied exactly?
BTW here's the debunk on McCain's latest attack ad that claims that Obama "lied" about his relationship with Ayers. Turns out that McCain is lying and Obama lying. http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/he_lied_about_bill_ayers.html
I agree the best thing for Obama is for McCain to keep spectacularly failing, but if he is the last man standing you can bet that pre-primary Obama will return and fill our ears with the melodies of hope, courage and possibility.

Here is the problem: McCain is now finding himself allied and being palls with another sort of person, who was always there, but now feels license to be forthright and open. Sarah certainly condones such behavior in her gatherings.

I'm sure she is right, there has not been enough scrutiny of Senator Obama over the last 20 months since he announced his candidacy. I'm sure there is something else out there that no one has found yet.
Did you ever think that maybe, even if you don't agree with his policies, he is an intelligent, compassionate, dedicated individual who loves his family and has used his natural gifts and talents to achieve a position of leadership in our society?
Even when the national polls seemed close just after the GOP convention, it was clear from McCain's behavior and campaign choices that their internal polling showed them way behind. The anger, negativity and erratic behavior of both McCain and Palin over the last few weeks has been putting nails in their coffin.
It is becoming clear that the only things that will produce a McCain victory are some external event (terrorist attack, message from Bin Laden, etc.) or if the horde of volunteers that Obama has been able to motivate to participate in his campaign get complacent.
I'm coming for you on Nov 5, Lois....can't wait to see how you explain exactly how all of your self-assured comments over the last 3 months have been completely wrong.
Gotta go, my friends, there is an Obama rally in Bishop City Park in 45 minutes and I need to go help set things up.
