Noticed last night that the leg loops on my Petzl Calidris harness were looking rather fuzzy. Upon closer inspection, I discovered that they were worn 9/10 through where they pass through the buckle. The edges of the buckle are rather sharp, and over time had cut through the webbing. This harness is about 2 years old, and seen maybe 1500 hours of use, mostly in a gym as I don't like the gear loops for racking trad gear - they are rather small - so I use a different one outside.
Anyone else seen this sort of failure mode? Seems like a serious design flaw to me.
PS: bugger. how the hell do I include a pic....

It worked out and you have to use brackets "[" isntead of the standard html tags. Yeah it doesn't look like those got tumbled or ground properly to round them off. I'm sure petzl will send you a new harness if you point that out. Leg loops are mostly for comfort though. So long as your waist belt isn't suffering the same plight then you should be fine.

I have two Calidris in semi-retirement, the older one shows maybe 10% worn through webbing at the leg loop buckles (which are also rusted from Thailand despite washing the harness multiple times), the newer one is a bit frayed but not anything significant. Each has seen at least as much use time as yours, but the fraying is almost certainly a function of number of times weighted (which is super high in the gym of course). And you might well have a batch of buckles that had unusually sharp edges. Call Petzl & send them those pics, they'll probably hook you up with a replacement.

Really it doesn't but the harness manufacturer will say that it does to cover their ass. For the same reason they should be doling out replacements for crappy flaws like this one.

I sent Petzl an email telling them about this last week, but so far they've just been ignoring me. Can't say I'm surprised.
Personally, I think leg loops are important for more than just comfort. I can just imagine taking a whipper, having the leg loops snap, then the waist belt rides up to my armpits, maybe snapping a rib, then compressing my chest so I can't breathe... I think that goes beyond the realm of mere comfort.

Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!!!
I thought my legloops were bad - this past fall when I cut off my adjustable fifi cord to replace it, I was rather horrified at how abraded the legloop crosspiece was from the cord rubbing on it all the time. And that was even after padding it [I thought] fair well with tape!

Amusing - after bad mouthing petzl, I just got an email from them asking me to send them the harness. They claim that "they have never seen anything like it."
