Social climber
the Time Before the Rocks Cooled.
Topic Author's Original Post - May 20, 2008 - 03:20pm PT
As recently as 26 Jun 2007, Mr. Fish appears to have used the remarkably dismissive and pejorative phrase "Eldo prancers™". (Registered trademark, US Patent pending.)

It appears, and Google confirms, that Russ first used this in a magnificent troll here (supertopo.com), where it successfully set the hook on some predictable denizens. Since then, this phrase seems to have entered the (California) climbing lexicon.

Is this truly Russ Walling's intellectual property, or does prior art exist from BITD?

Please advise.

Sidenote: Did you really start climbing before the rocks cooled? I started when p'terodactyls still nested on the Chief.

I started climbing before there was prancing in Eldo. Just wrote a brief story of those days.

'dactyls? That was after there was enough O2 (finally) in the atmosphere to oxidize the iron, when redrocks turned red, n00b...

back OnT, I'd be really surprised if that phrase started anywhere else, anytime earlier, from anyone else, but what do I know?

Robs--

I think the big question is how many climbs have been named
Eldo Prancers in the last year.
There is absolutely no doubt that it has entered the lexicon.

Scuff, I was thinking maybe for the one with no name on the opposite side. Or, we (you) can save it for later.

Today in Eldo, we passed not a soul on a trail. The West Ridge and Rincon were deserted; my partner and I saw just one other climber, a rope soloist. From the top of the West Ridge Ampitheater, I saw a party on or near the start of the Yellow Spur, and that was it for Redgarden.

So two things come to mind:

1) With the torrential runoff in the creek, the wildflowers, the beautiful stone and not a soul in sight, I can only imagine what a joy it would have been to be a pioneer in such an incomparable place.

2) Maybe the crowds have given up in embarrassment now that their prancing ways are no longer secret. So keep them terms coming, Russ!

... bump for Eldo appreciation

In the first half of the seventies I was lurking around Eldo. Back then there was a rickity log bridge and no trail to Rincon, just endless talus hopping. There weren't crowds of other climbers and you never really had to wait to climb. And even then I felt the same thing Pewf expressed. Utter amazement for the "magical mystery tour" it must have been for the pioneers. My hat is off to them all and their legendary accomplishments.

By the way "Eldo Prancers"... Love it!
