I need to defend my homestead with a gun that is both effective at repelling marauders and is evocative of the Wild West, or at least the Wild West as portrayed in the spaghetti westerns that so influenced my youth. Quality and craftsmanship is, of course, paramount; cost, however, is no object. Please steer me toward such a carbine.

thanks, marky

I recommend a 105 mm howitzer. They're very handy for keeping avalanches away, and I bet would work with all sorts of other intruders and marauders.

Edit: Plus you don't have to worry about needing a concealed weapon permit.

Get a marlin 45-70 lever gun. If you have a lot of open terrain to cover consider the new Marlin .308 Lever gun. Decent modern long range performance in a stylish nostalgic lever gun.

For home defense, I pack a Glock .40 cal. For Wild West shootin', it's a Winchester 94 in 30-30.Of course, this has Nothing to do with 'gun nuts OR fascists'.

What you ask for does not make sense. Most "gun nuts" do not approve of dictators or government run lives. So get a gun and defend yourself or be a fascist and let the government do everything for you.

Do I need to draw a Venn diagram?

No, I do not. We understand each other.

AND he said "carbine", technically a short rifle chambered in a handgun cartridge.

I'd go for the Armalite/Glock, but he said "old west" so, hey,.... you're phucked
(but at least he'll go down looking,....... like an IDIOT!

a little slow today. In 7 days I have to take the Praxis II Math content test. My mid life career change. Not too worried but I have been doing math problems all day. It was easy 20 years ago, a little tougher now.

Carbine!

Up until then, a nice shotgun would have fit the bill.

The .45 ACP was just a little late for the historical reference but more useful at close range.

How close in / far out do you need?

Is it going to be mounted on a wall next to game?

well, just remember that you can solve a quadratic by factoring or by using the quadratic formula

that's more math than the average college-educated American knows

Dear Teh Gun Nuts and Teh Fascists:

I made my criteria explicit: I want to (a) repel marauders and (b) evoke Sergio Leone flicks.

What's the f-ing problem?

Taking the title literally, does he want us first to fill him with castor oil (as favoured by Mussolini's fascists), then shoot him? If we fill him with castor oil, he'll probably want us to shoot him.

I used to do quadratic equations in my head in 10th grade; got near perfect math SATs.

Now I have trouble balancing my checkbook.

So I climb rocks.

Then your choice is simple. The 45-70 lever action paired with a Gatleing gun of the same caliber. Should get a few single action revolvers in .45 long colt as well to round out the image.

Forget the carbine & use an 870 w/ birdshot. Most carbine rounds will over penetrate and are therefore more dangerous than effective. Regardless of what you choose, practicing until you're real good is paramount.

To be authentic and effective and not endanger your neighbors, go with a shotgun, as other's have suggested. carbine bullets are going to go a long way.

If you were to let up a little on the wild west theme and still had to have a carbine, the M1 carbine is a cool gun, collectible, historic, and maybe you could find a good Singer or one from a typewriter company for not an arm and a leg, but you still are talking danger down range.

If you really believe that all quadratic equations can be solved by factoring, then why do you think we have the quadratic formula?

too many people just mindlessly plug-and-chug the quadratic formula when it's more elegant to factor (when possible)
