The cost of an avalanche awareness program is small compared to the cost of any winter backcountry activity - equipment, travel, etc. And tiny compared to your life.
The program that is being presented isn't a full field program, but sounds like it would be very helpful to both novices and the experienced.

well, I bring it up because $15 is the difference between a student going or not going.
really, the well-off berkeleyites should sponsor a broke companion

Umm, yes marky, I tend to agree - sessions like this are a kind of public service. There's something to be said for retailers and manufacturers providing them by donation, or even no fee. The talks may generate business for presenters, stores, and manufacturers - equipment purchases and courses - and also generate goodwill.
If a talk raises awareness and saves a few rescues if not lives (directly or indirectly), everyone's ahead.
It seems likely that the presentation is already being subsidized - $15 isn't a lot.

Marky,
It's true that $15 is cheap for all the good information presented in this lecture, but send me a PM and I will offer you a special "broke-student" price. Just remember that mountain guides are trying to make a living too ... blah, blah, blah.
Cheers!
