This is in the Washington Post this morning. Given all the squirrel lovers, I thought some of you would enjoy it -
About 2,500 squirrel enthusiasts belong to the online group The Squirrel Lover's Club. This week you can do what they do year-round: honor squirrels. The first week in October is Squirrel Awareness Week, so maybe you can keep track of the number and the kinds of squirrels you see in your yard or while walking to school. Here's something else to be aware of regarding the furry creatures: There are 35 types of squirrels in North America. The most popular in this area is the Eastern Gray Squirrel.
(By the way, notice the apostrophe in "Lover's" in the article? Doesn't this suggest that those who love squirrels possess clubs? Maybe this group isn't all about loving the squirrels, but more about clubbing them. I gotta stop thinking so much).

Crimpie, I was walking the dogs over by the lake near my house when I see some sort of animal swimming across the lake. The point where it was swimming was at least 200 yards wide. I thought maybe a snake, but you could see a body behind the head. Maybe a beaver, but it wasn't very big. Muskrat maybe? So I hurried to get in position to watch it exit and it was a SQUIRREL! I had no idea they swam so well. But, maybe it just fell in the lake and took the long way to shore by mistake. It sure looked exhausted when it exited the lake with its tail dragging on the sand.

The Lake District, in the north of England, is on the front lines of a new Hundred Years’ War. It is a war between rodents. Since the 19th century, gray squirrels, an American import, have been overtaking Britain’s native red squirrels and claiming their territory. The grays have moved up from the south of England, thinning out the reds along the way. The reds now survive mostly in Scotland and the English counties, like Northumberland, that border it. The grays are larger and tougher and meaner than the reds. They can eat newly fallen acorns, and the reds cannot. They cross open lands that the reds are scared of. They are more sociable than reds, allowing for higher population densities. Although gray males cannot mate with red females, they often intimidate red males out of doing so. “It’s like: ‘That’s my girl. You move away!’ ” Redesdale said.

Redesdale doesn’t travel alone. Always by his side is a man named Paul Parker. Parker is a professional pest controller from Newcastle. He keeps 300 dead grays in his freezer, seven of them skinned, waiting for the day he will have time to cook them.

I've hunted squirrel nealry my whole life and if I could just fine me a good squirrel dog, life would be good.

my grandma, sweet little old lady, she catches them in one of those live traps, then she drowns them in a bucket of water....She hates them..
honestly, its one of the scariest mental images I can conjure..

Squirrels are tree rats.
Kitimus Kat likes em fine!!! She eats the heart and lungs first.
The only good squirrel is a dead squirrel, especially if you are trying to feed birds.
And remember, Pickaxe Ron, you should have bought a squirrel.

Crowley, that's just being mean and ornery. Since I stopped eating squirrels, I have developed a great fondness for them.
