His new book is out, and he's giving a talk tomorrow night in
Berkeley.
Not trying to start a political battle here, but I am curious if any of my fellow supertopo lefties (or left-curious righties) will be going to the talk?

Cody's presents an evening with Robert Reich and his new book SUPERCAPITALISM: The Transformation of Business, Democracy, and Everyday Life. From one of our most valued voices on politics, business, and the economy comes a breakthrough book on the clash between capitalism and democracy. Our economy has become more efficient than ever, with turbocharged, Web-based global capitalism morphing into supercapitalism. But as Reich makes clear, while supercapitalism is working well to enlarge the economic pie, democracy - charged with caring for all its citizens - is becoming less and less effective under its influence. He makes clear how the tools traditionally used to temper America's societal problems have withered as supercapitalism has burgeoned, and sets out a clear course that can lead the nation to a vibrant capitalism and a concurrent, equally vibrant democracy. Robert Reich is professor of public policy at the Goldman School of Public Policy at UC Berkeley. He served in three national administrations; his articles appear frequently in The New York Times and The Washington Post, and he is a commentator for American Public Media's Marketplace, heard on NPR.

Argh! I'm a fan, and I really wanted to go tomorrow night, but we're hosting Movie Night at our house (within a few blocks of First Congregational), so intelligent talk about the decline of democracy will be replaced by beautiful images of the People's Republic of China -- and a whole lot of flying daggers (House of Flying Daggers on big projection screen: cool!).
Have you read SC already?

No...I appreciate his radio commentaries. I hope he recorded the audio book himself as that's how I 'read' for the most part these days.

Yep, you're probably right. Buying a book? Must be Harry Potter. Speaking of audiobooks, I hear that HP is quite good on tape (CD, whatever). I'm waiting for someone (my mom, possibly) to finish with it so I can borrow. I haven't even read the first one (how embarassing!).

always appreciated his commentary on NPR, though he occasionally dips into hyperbole. Mostly quite sound thinking imho.
I've always wondered why no one ever thought that there was an inherent paradox in a capitalistic economy that requires an unemployed labor pool, and the egalitarian principles of a democratic society.

No paradox. (Democratic Society) + (undocumented immigrants) + (6 hrs/day American Idol) + (megachurch) - (accountability of executive branch) = (Thriving Capitalistic Economy)

Would like to hear Reich, but will be in class, I was intriqued when he was in office and like his commentary on NPR.
I have spent 0$ on Harry Potter. Suffered through book one and part of another one (third? fifth?) at family request, conclusion, unreadable, though with some good ideas.
Stayed awake through most of movie one, really did like the snake part.
